Consultant/NHS Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult FIRST Team

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical leadership for the assessment and management of older adult patients, 70 years and above experiencing crisis in the catchment area.

FIRST would accept referral via the phone and the referrer needs to have seen the patient face to face within 24 hours of the referral being made and the patient must have given their consent for the referral. The referral line is managed by a CPN‑shift coordinator 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

General duties of the role:

  • Provide clinical leadership and be the Responsible Clinician for the patients referred to the FIRST and DISS teams.
  • Review new patients in a timely manner and oversee the clinical management of patients in community for hospital avoidance and Crisis interventions.
  • Be available for timely reviews and meetings and facilitate discharge planning to community or to elevate to an inpatient admission as a gatekeeper.
  • The post holder may need to attend MDT on inpatient units only for complex patients.
  • Be actively involved in supporting staff development and in effecting continual service improvement.
  • Provide clinical supervision to the SAS doctors.
  • Clinical Audit: The post holder will participate in audit to ensure the continuous improvement of the service.
  • The post holder will only be expected to provide cover for holidays and absences to colleagues with mutual consultation and agreement.

Requirements of the role:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register, or within six months.
  • Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • On the Specialist Register with qualifications Older Adult/General Adult/Dual trainee.
  • Postgraduate degree in psychiatry MRC Psych or equivalent.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.

Clinical skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.

Transport:

  • Hold and will use valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of proposed alternative.
