The Clinical Manager will provide inspirational leadership and operational oversight for the Inpatient Unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality, compassionate care. The post holder will act as a clinical expert, supporting patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team while shaping the long‑term strategic development of inpatient services.
This role includes direct line management of:
Physiotherapist Lead Senior Nurse Long stay Unit
New 10 bedded CHC Unit
The role will manage the contract for Primrose Community Beds (8)
Operational & Clinical Leadership
Lead the 24/7 operational management of the IPU, ensuring a Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led service.
Provide visible clinical leadership, supporting the nursing team and modelling best practice.
Ensure holistic, person-centred care that meets the physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and families.
Maintain compliance with CQC standards, hospice policies, and evidence-based practice.
Patient assessments, care planning, documentation, and risk management.
Ensure effective coordination of care through ward rounds, MDT meetings, and shift handovers.
Manage bed flow, length of stay, and timely discharge planning.
Promote safeguarding awareness and ensure appropriate referrals for MCA, DoLS, and Best Interest processes.
Management of budget for areas within portfolio
Support the Director of Clinical Services with the development of 10 CHC beds.
Strategic
Work with the Director of Clinical Services and Medical Director to shape the future vision of inpatient services.
Engage with patients, carers, and local health and social care partners to strengthen the hospice’s role in palliative and end-of-life care.
Contribute to organisational strategy, particularly regarding community and inpatient service integration.
Deputise for the Director of Clinical Services when required.
Governance, Quality & Safety
Contribute to clinical governance through policy development, audit, and quality improvement.
Ensure staff participation in governance activities, working groups, and service development projects.
Promote an open reporting culture, ensuring timely investigation and learning from incidents and complaints.
Support the recording, collection and analysis of patient outcomes and service activity data.
Lead recruitment, workforce planning, performance management, and staff wellbeing initiatives.
Manage appraisals, mandatory training, absence, and annual leave.
Support student placements and ensure high quality learning environments.
Oversee induction, mentorship, and competency development for staff and volunteers.
Foster a culture of reflective practice, continuous learning, and professional growth.
Additional Operational Duties
Act as Tissue Viability and Nutrition Lead, including quarterly meetings.
Manage the Admissions & Discharge Lead and ensure cover arrangements.
Work closely with domestic contractors (completing monthly audits and walkarounds.
Attend audit and risk assessment meetings, ensuring compliance and up-to-date documentation.
Maintain the risk register for responsible areas.
Strengthen relationships with Primrose bed management.
Participate in the hospice on call rota.

Qualifications
- QUALIFICATIONS Appropriate professional, educational requirements ESSENTIAL
- DESIRABLE
- Post registration qualification in palliative care, geriatrics, oncology or another relevant field
- Degree in relevant area
- Advanced communication skills (or willingness to undertake)
- Leadership training
- Masters level study (or willingness to work towards)
- Current NMC registration
- EXPERIENCE
- Senior level clinical experience in palliative care, geriatrics, oncology, or related field.
- Proven leadership and team/service management experience.
- Experience leading teams through change.
- Workforce development and recruitment experience.
- Strong understanding of data recording and reporting.
- Experience in audit and quality monitoring.
- Delegated budget management.
- Experience working with volunteers (desirable).
- SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- Quality Improvement methodology.
- Knowledge of hospice systems, clinical governance, and relevant legislation.
- Expert understanding of end-of-life pathways and person centred care.
