Job Title: Principal Development Management Officer

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Development Management Officer to join a fast-paced and high-performing Development Management team, recognised for delivering best-in-class planning services. You will play a key role in shaping major regeneration and development projects across the borough.
THE ROLE
As a Principal Development Management Officer, you will lead on a wide range of Development Management projects, including complex major applications and strategically significant schemes.
You will be responsible for managing projects from pre-application through to determination and appeals, while working closely with senior stakeholders, elected members, and multidisciplinary teams. This role will position you as a key contributor within the organisation as a Principal Development Management Officer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leading on complex major planning applications and strategic developments
- Managing pre-application, application, and appeal work
- Preparing and presenting reports to Planning Committees, Cabinet, and Members
- Undertaking high-quality planning assessments in line with policy and legislation
- Managing a complex workload across multiple projects
- Liaising with internal teams, stakeholders, and external bodies
- Supporting and mentoring junior staff and contributing to team leadership
- Providing technical advice to the public and stakeholders
- Contributing to spatial planning and policy development where required
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- RTPI accredited degree in Town Planning or related discipline
- MRTPI qualified or working towards Chartership
- Strong knowledge of planning legislation, policy, and Development Management
- Experience managing complex and large-scale planning applications
- Ability to lead projects and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience mentoring or managing junior staff
- Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving abilities
- A proactive, solutions-focused, and customer-oriented approach
