Bereavement Services Officer

We are seeking a caring, organised, and professional Bereavement Services Officer to join our team at University Hospital Coventry.

Responsibilities include providing a sensitive, timely and professional service to families and carers following the death of a patient within Trust premises; acting as a key point of contact; supporting bereaved relatives with death certification, registration, funeral arrangements, and post‑mortem processes; liaising with clinical teams, Medical Examiners, the Coroner’s Office, and external partners; maintaining accurate records; supporting hospital post‑mortem processes; arranging Trust funerals; providing information, advice and signposting to bereavement support services; contributing to learning from deaths and service improvement initiatives; and participating in team huddles, meetings and required training.

  • Act as an intermediary between bereaved families, clinicians and the Medical Examiner Service, resolving concerns relating to a patient’s death.
  • Support families with registration of death and associated documentation.
  • Perform preliminary review of medical records to establish circumstances of each death.
  • Respond to enquiries from bereaved families, Trust staff and external agencies with empathy, professionalism and discretion.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records of deaths in line with Trust policy, legislation and national guidance.
  • Co‑ordinate with coroners, registrars, mortuary services, chaplaincy, funeral directors and other partners.
  • Support hospital post‑mortem processes, including obtaining consent in line with the Human Tissue Act 2004.
  • Arrange Trust funerals and manage cases where no next of kin are identified.
  • Provide information, advice and signposting to bereavement support services, recognising emotional, cultural and faith needs.
  • Contribute to governance and improvement initiatives and participate in team huddles and training.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car for business use.
  • Excellent communication skills, emotional resilience and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work calmly and compassionately in a sensitive environment, upholding Trust values.
  • Relevant experience in a similar role is preferred.
