Job Description
Purpose of the Post:
- Receive experience and support in the workplace to complete an apprenticeship and gain qualifications in the field
- The apprentice will provide a service that supports the management, inspection and maintenance of the trunk road network by taking part in engineering, structural and environmental tasks across specialist teams.
Main Duties:
- The primary purpose of the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent is to ensure that civil structures of the trunk road network—such as bridges, walls, tunnels and associated assets—are inspected, maintained and managed safely and in accordance with Welsh Government technical standards.
- The Structures Civil Engineering Apprentice role is an opportunity for the apprentice to gain broad practical experience across engineering, structures, tunnels and network management teams in supporting the maintenance, inspection and management of the trunk roads.
- The main duties of the role will be to:
- Support the work of the Network Management Unit, the Tunnels and Technology Unit and the Business and Projects Unit by participating in technical tasks and inspections.
- Learn how to manage safety risks on the trunk road network and identify deficiencies or hazards in assets.
- Take part in vital inspections, highway inspections and maintenance work across North and Mid Wales.
- Help maintain highway structures, including bridges, walls and tunnels.
- Support project planning, project management and live operations by observing the work of the Traffic Officer Service.
- Develop civil engineering skills such as design, AutoCAD, surveying quantities and supporting contract procurement.
- Participate in operational and administrative tasks that ensure that the network is managed effectively and in accordance with Welsh Government standards.
- Follow the Council’s policies on health and safety, equality, data protection and carbon reduction.

- Equivalent Level 2 vocational qualification (e.g. BTEC First Level 2 Diploma)
- Valid current driving licence
Specialist Skills and Knowledge – Essential
- Valid current driving licence
Language Needs
- Listening and Speaking – Intermediate Level (conversation in Welsh, intermediate proficiency)
- Reading and Comprehension – Intermediate Level (understand everyday correspondence, reports in Welsh)
- Writing – Intermediate Level (write specific purpose letters, emails, short reports in Welsh and English)
