Clinic Manager – Outpatients (Southport & Ormskirk)
An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, imaginative and motivated manager to work in the Outpatients department at St Helens Hospital.
The Outpatients Clinic Manager is responsible for and will have a specific focus on visible, accessible, and strong clinical leadership. Patient experience is a key focus along with the delivery of safe, timely, high‑quality care within the Outpatient Department. The post holder will lead service and quality improvement programmes alongside supporting the operational management of the Outpatient Department. This includes ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and the development and maintenance of the highest standards of patient care and service delivery.
The post holder must exhibit excellent communication and organisational skills.
The successful candidate will provide day‑to‑day leadership of the clinical areas and work 5 out of 7 days with some late shifts/weekends as required. They will participate in the bleep rota for the site.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required to lead the team in a professional, compassionate and inclusive manner.

Job responsibilities
KEY DUTIES
The post holder is responsible for leading and managing the outpatient clinical service, ensuring high quality care, and meeting performance targets. Key duties include:
- Acting as a positive role model through professional leadership and accountable clinical practice.
- Ensuring the environment meets appropriate standards for healthcare delivery and infection control best practice.
- Providing day‑to‑day visible, accessible, and authoritative leadership.
- Ensuring patient care delivery is of the highest standard with dignity and respect for patients and families.
- Actively supporting the Matron in delivering high‑quality, modern, dynamic, patient‑centred services.
- Providing support to patients and their relatives/carers.
- Optimising patient flow and access, preventing delays and optimising clinic utilisation.
- Supporting the Matron in the delivery of key performance targets.
Infection Prevention
- Ensuring staff are aware of and implement best practice.
- Maintaining a clean clinic environment and leading quality and service standards for cleanliness.
- Leading audits and upholding high infection prevention standards.
- Engaging with Infection Control Team and Head of Quality for effective processes.
- Promoting a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Communicating lessons learned and changes to clinical practice from RCAs.
- Implementing national, local, and Trust standards and monitoring performance.
- Complying with National Standards for care such as Essence of Care, Our NHS Our Future, and National Service Frameworks.
- Participating in monthly nursing indicator audits and implementing action plans.
- Ensuring risk assessment and management systems are in place per Health and Safety legislation.
- Undertaking Clinical Risk Assessments as appropriate.
- Ensuring training on medical devices, procurement, decontamination, and competency recording.
- Maintaining high standards of documentation and care planning.
- Developing links with other departments to prevent cancellations and ensure quality experience.
- Overseeing trials of new equipment and ensuring safety and licencing compliance.
- Capturing and acting on patient experience information and reporting weekly.
- Promoting patient‑centred service delivery and responding to staff, patients, and families.
- Maintaining effective channels for service user views and concerns.
- Ensuring patient experience remains focal for improvement.
- Establishing relationships with PALS and complaints team to address concerns.
Clinical Governance
- Supporting the implementation of divisional and Directorate governance strategy.
- Ensuring adherence to child protection and safeguarding vulnerable adult protocols.
- Implementing best practice policies and procedures.
- Conducting formal investigations of accidents and incidents, reporting within agreed time limits.
Communication
- Ensuring staff feel informed and listened to.
- Modeling excellent communication and listening skills with patients, relatives, and staff.
- Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with Data Protection, Freedom of Information, Caldicott Principles.
- Ensuring good communication lines across services and disciplines.
- Providing comprehensive orientation and induction for nursing staff.
- Implementing the Nursing Strategy and contributing across the organisation.
- Co‑ordinating multi‑disciplinary collaboration.
- Supporting the Matron in leading Outpatients services across the trust.
- Managing Deputy Clinic Managers and supporting staff development.
- Ensuring adherence to Equality and Diversity policy and Race Equality Scheme.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- RGN Registration
- ENB 998 or equivalent
- Educated to Diploma Level
Knowledge
- Previous experience within Outpatient Department
- Demonstrable staff supervisory experience
- Evidence of Change Management
- Specialist knowledge relevant to area of practice
- Knowledge of management of patient care within Outpatient environment
