Our client has almost five decades of expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems across diverse industry sectors and is a leading automation system solution provider in the UK. They are seeking to recruit an experienced Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to complement an established team and deliver innovative special purpose automation machinery projects.
Responsibilities
- Design, detailing and successful delivery of multiple projects from order acceptance to customer handover, using 3D CAD within project timeframes.
- Conduct Design Reviews during the design process to ensure requirements are met, designed for assembly, robust and reliable operation, and aligned with budget constraints.
- Obtain a Design Pass Off by the customer on time and ensure BOMs are produced on time and within budget.
- Negotiate with external suppliers to obtain cost-efficient materials in line with project budgets and timing plans.
- Assist the electrical design process by communicating clearly throughout the project, and compile build folders and communicate build details to machine tool fitters to ensure efficient builds.
- Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers as required; undertake visits to customer sites to understand requirements and obtain measurements for drawings, layouts and other considerations.
- Assess and improve design concepts with a team at sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs, lead times and assist in plans for trials.
- Obtain all parts, samples and drawings in advance to support the design phase; check design work produced by others for accuracy.
- Conduct project reviews with customers and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) including manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings.
- Carry out machine risk assessments during the design phase to meet Machinery Directive requirements; lead projects through development and installation with proactive delivery of fixes and adherence to H&S and safety rules.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Significant competence and experience in mechanical design, robotics, automation, design of mechanical mechanisms and pneumatic systems.
- Degree qualified/HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a mechanical design role, ideally related to automation machinery.
- Expert user of a 3D parametric CAD package (ideally Solid Edge; SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo also considered) with a proven track record of delivering mechanical design projects to time and budget.
- Knowledge of national and international standards for machine design and machine safety systems and CE marking requirements.
- Self-motivated, positive approach to problem solving with commercial awareness and effective communication at all levels; track record of working within a multi-disciplinary team to solve problems.
