Job overview

This fixed‑term research post in lung cancer is aimed at post‑foundation, pre‑specialty trainees (F2–IMT3). It is based in the Academic Respiratory Unit at North Bristol NHS Trust, with an honorary University of Bristol contract. The unit is internationally recognised and works closely with clinical services delivering lung cancer clinics, MDTs, pleural services, interventional procedures (e.g., EBUS, thoracoscopy), and the regional lung cancer screening programme. The fellow will join a multidisciplinary academic team (consultants, registrars, and an Academic Foundation Doctor) and a dedicated clinical lung cancer service. The role includes involvement in research projects, clinical trials, and data analysis, with a focus on early lung cancer diagnosis. Clinical work will be supernumerary for training purposes and include participation in lung cancer and pleural two‑week‑wait clinics and MDT meetings.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop research skills around data analysis and interpretation
  • Lead on local recruitment to respiratory infection trials
  • Lead on research studies exploring pathways to early diagnosis in lung cancer using existing datasets
  • Attend and present at academic conferences and educational meetings, nationally and internationally
  • Write scientific manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals
  • There are no on‑call duties or out‑of‑hours work associated with the post.

Qualifications And Registration

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) accreditation
  • Additional undergraduate degree (e.g., BSc or intercalated degree)
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD, MSc, or PhD)

Training And Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of working in UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience, including evidence of achieving foundation and (where relevant) core medical training competencies
  • Recent experience of general medical posts
  • Does not hold a current NNT for specialty training

Audit, Research, Teaching, Publications

  • Experience in audit project, including completion and write‑up
  • Proven track record in research, including at least one poster/oral presentation at a national or international conference
  • At least one publication in a peer‑reviewed journal
  • Proven teaching ability
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification
  • Involvement in successful grant applications
  • GCP certification

Further Training & Management

  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career

Personal Requirements

  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels

The successful applicant(s) will normally commence at the minimum of the pay scale unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
