Job Overview

The Mace Legal Department provides legal support for Mace’s various construction business units. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a pragmatic, commercial approach to law in addition to a breadth of construction expertise. Candidates must have the ability to deal with a wide range of people across the business, and the confidence to operate relatively autonomously in a fast-paced commercial environment. An understanding of insurances, dispute avoidance, or any relevant commercial experience would also be useful.

Overview of Role

  • Construction Lawyer;
  • 2-3 years PQE (PQE for guidance only);
  • Non-contentious role in the Mace legal team.

Role

  • Review of construction contracts received with client tenders to identify risks to Mace;
  • Negotiation and drafting of construction contracts and supply chain step-down contracts;
  • Close liaison with commercial teams to manage the process of contract review through to signing of contracts and ad hoc advice through the life of the project;
  • Contribute to legal department training sessions for commercial colleagues;
  • Updating precedent documents;
  • Assisting commercial colleagues in managing and mitigating potential dispute situations, raising and managing insurance notifications;
  • Work with Mace’s insurance brokers and with external counsel.

Experience (essential)

  • Legal qualification in-house or in a private practice construction team;
  • Experience with JCT, NEC and bespoke forms of contract;
  • Experience negotiating complex construction contracts and ancillary documents;
  • Experience drafting negotiated positions across different forms of construction documents;
  • Risk reviews of all ancillary documentation such as NDAs, collateral warranties, PCG/performance bonds, sub-contract/sub-consultant contracts;
  • Good working knowledge of the Construction Act.

Experience (advantageous)

  • Claims or dispute avoidance;
  • Insurance in contracts and managing insurance claims;
  • Experience of dealing with performance-based contracts, joint venture agreements, and/or alliancing forms of contract;
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance issues including anti-bribery, data protection, modern slavery etc;
  • Working knowledge of public procurement rules in the UK or other jurisdiction.

Attributes

  • Strong technical legal knowledge and commercial understanding of the construction industry;
  • Good working knowledge of the JCT and NEC forms;
  • Excellent negotiation skills;
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills to manage internal stakeholder groups and external client relationships;
  • Ability to communicate with and manage commercial colleagues;
  • Quick learner, ability to prioritise according to business need and to work effectively as part of a busy team.
