Job Summary

Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse on Ward 1, Withybush General Hospital. This role requires the use of evidence-based practice, excellent communication, and leadership skills, together with a readiness to innovate and develop nursing within a team approach. The successful candidate will be forward‑thinking, strive for the highest standards of patient‑centred care and experience, and be compassionate, enthusiastic and motivated to progress professionally.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide visible clinical leadership, ensuring safe, high‑quality, person‑centred care.
  • Manage the ward/team workforce, including recruitment, appraisal, performance and staff wellbeing.
  • Lead on quality, safety and clinical governance, including audits, risk management and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operational management, including patient flow, capacity and resource use.
  • Support staff development, education and a positive team culture.
  • Ensure an excellent patient experience, responding to feedback and driving improvements.
  • Contribute to service development and organisational priorities, deputising for senior colleagues as required.

Experience and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent experience)
  • Pertinent postgraduate diploma (or equivalent development/experience AND willingness to undertake appropriate postgraduate study when in post)
  • Bronze IQT
  • Teaching/Coaching qualification (or equivalent experience)
  • Knowledge of legislation pertinent to role
  • Proven and relevant experience at Band 6
  • Appropriate experience within speciality and sound knowledge of relevant speciality
  • Able to demonstrate sound knowledge of NMC Code (2018)
  • Proven post‑registration experience and evidence of coordinating and managing a team of staff
  • Aware of professional issues and developments
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Experience of working in a multi‑professional environment
  • Experience in budget management
  • Experience of effective staff management
  • Experience of running a ward/area/department
  • Experience of mentoring pre‑registration nursing / midwifery students
  • IT skills
  • Ability to relate theory into practice through reflective skills
  • Good knowledge of information governance / data protection requirements

Desirable

  • Recognised management qualification
  • Recognised leadership qualification
  • Masters degree in pertinent subject
  • Experience of working in a Band 7 role
  • Understanding of financial and resource management processes

Language skills

  • Welsh speaker (Level 1) – desirable
