Job Description:

Director of Advocacy – VOLUNTARY (FOR LONDON BASED APPLICANTS ONLY)

International Women’s Initiative (IWI) is an organisation that raises awareness of the threats to the human rights of women around the globe and promotes gender equality. Since 2012, IWI has worked to eradicate and educate on human rights violations against women. We take our values seriously and believe that we cannot achieve equality without transparency, collaboration, inclusiveness, integrity or tenacity.

IWI’s Director of Advocacy will lead a team and coordinate IWI’s overall advocacy strategy, identify, develop, and execute high‑impact and game‑changing campaigns that empower supporters to achieve concrete victories. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advocacy works collaboratively with senior management to broaden the impact of IWI’s advocacy outreach, oversee messaging and constituent services.

The Director of Advocacy will focus on building and maintaining relationships, and leading the project of creating infrastructure for this evolving branch of IWI. With support from other staff, this position will:

  • Create an advocacy team that will educate the public on women’s human rights violations within the UK and change and enforce policy to ensure that women in the UK can take advantage of their rights.
  • Participate in developing and implementing grassroots organising campaigns informed by the experiences of women whose rights have been violated.
  • Develop programs for survivors, friends, family, and allies.
  • Develop and implement a 24‑hour UK‑wide hotline and associated training from a victim‑services framework, providing information on resources including legal, mental and shelter assistance. Oversee the hotline’s individual advocacy, volunteer‑advocate staffing, fundraising and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct situation analysis through desk‑based research and analysis at the individual country level (context specific) of ongoing and future interventions funded by international donors, national governments and INGOs within IWI’s mandate.
  • Monitor and analyse relevant activity in the UK directly associated with women’s human rights.
  • Provide strategic analysis and background for the development of IWI’s annual policy agenda.
  • Develop and implement strategy for advancing policy goals with key decision‑makers within the UK government.
  • Organise the efforts of IWI’s advocacy team and other staff who monitor and act on the national policy agenda.
  • Develop policy proposals and advocate them individually and with allies.
  • Communicate with and brief lobbyists, members of Parliament, their staff and agency officials through in‑person meetings, written communications and phone calls.
  • Brief IWI’s Board, advocacy partners and allies on policy matters through written and electronic media.

Time Commitment: The minimum commitment is an average of 10 hours per week, including a weekly one‑on‑one meeting with supervisor.

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
