About the College/Department
Digital Solutions & Services are responsible for providing the digital platform to enable the best possible service to staff, students and stakeholders across the University and beyond. We take a collaborative approach to developing strategic goals to provide a diverse range of information technology and business services designed to support learning, teaching and research at the University of Derby.
Digital Solutions & Services are responsible for ensuring that the University’s IT capability is fit for purpose, future focused and able to protect, support and enhance the full breadth of services that will be delivered either on campus or digitally online with contributions across the department. We aim to assist students, teaching staff, support departments and collaborative partners to ensure we are making an impact on the University’s current and future digital landscape.
About the Role
As a Second Line Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the University's IT services, acting as an escalation point for complex technical issues and ensuring the smooth operation of critical end-user systems. This includes supporting and maintaining student computing labs, staff devices, business applications, edge networking infrastructure, and audio-visual technology across the University estate.
Working within the Service Delivery team, you will help deliver an outstanding technology experience for both staff and students by proactively monitoring system health, resolving incidents, and ensuring compliance with cyber security and operational standards. You will be responsible for triaging and managing escalated support requests, collaborating closely with infrastructure specialists to resolve underlying issues and drive continuous service improvements.
The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to technical projects and strategic initiatives, working alongside third-line engineers to deliver infrastructure enhancements and service development priorities. As part of a flexible and customer-focused Service Delivery function, you will be expected to provide support across multiple teams and locations, adapting to the evolving needs of the University.
About You
We are looking for a proactive and customer-focused IT professional who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to deliver excellent service. The ideal candidate will hold a relevant degree or HND and/or possess equivalent professional experience, supported by a genuine interest in current and emerging IT technologies.
You will be a high-performing team player who thrives in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary IT and AV environment, leading by example through professionalism, accountability, and a positive approach to problem-solving. With broad knowledge across technologies such as application delivery, networking, operating systems, and end-user computing, you will be confident in diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical and decision-making skills, taking ownership of problems through to resolution and responding effectively to changing priorities. You will be consultative and collaborative in your approach, building strong relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers across the University, while acting as a positive ambassador for Digital Solutions and Services.
