The Role
Oxford City Council is leading the City’s response to the Climate Emergency. The Environmental Sustainability Team accelerates city-wide climate action (including net zero delivery, environmental regulation (flood, air quality, land quality, biodiversity, trees) and waste and recycling strategy and is on the front line in responding to the Council’s declared Climate Emergency.
We are looking for a passionate, capable, and dynamic Officer to join our Environmental Sustainability team and play a leading role in supporting projects and workstreams that deliver on our climate and recycling targets.
You will be involved in supporting the delivery of key climate action and recycling projects and workstreams, as well as delivering waste hierarchy literacy, communications materials and events, analysing information, preparing and maintaining critical project management documentation, and delivering discrete project work in collaboration with teams across the Council.
This work will provide an excellent opportunity for candidates wishing to build on their existing knowledge and skills on climate action, partnership working, and project management.

- To be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering climate action workstreams and projects in support of the Council’s Environmental Regulatory, Waste and Recycling and Net Zero objectives.
- To play a key role in supporting the Business Lead with workstreams that drive forward ideas and solutions to address barriers.
- To work, build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders (business, funding bodies, members) and drive high quality outcomes.
Role responsibilities and main duties
To support the Environmental Sustainability Lead and Managers with delivery of climate action and recycling projects and regulatory workstreams; including but not limited to:
- Workstreams and Project work:
- Deliver discrete aspects of work (e.g. research to inform a project decision, critical analysis of reports and data relating to sustainability and carbon reporting.
- Deliver events and communications materials.
- Documenting and updating project scope, progress and communicating this to all involved. Managing project documentation and evidencing records for grant funded projects.
- Organising and minuting meetings and undertaking activities to support delivery of the project.
- Participate in reviewing outcomes of the projects and capturing lessons to learn and working with Project Managers to make improvements to future project outcomes.
- Supporting risk and issue management by researching and/or summarising challenges and assessing options in order to inform project board decisions.
- Updating project websites on progress and relevant information.
- Contract management of expert consultancy and communications planning.
- Support with in-person waste and recycling site visits, under guidance of senior staff.
To assist in the delivery of Business-as-Usual tasks associated with climate action:
- Collating data and manage submissions for climate scorecards.
- Building relationships and knowledge with colleagues and embed environmental sustainability and regulatory needs across the Council, via Carbon Literacy training and climate action workstreams.
- Building upon relationships to identify new opportunities and gain buy-in from colleagues.
- Managing the day-to-day communication with the general public.
- Leading on the delivery themed events relating to collaboration within the Council or learning from other parts of the sustainability team.
- Updating and maintaining project websites
- Supporting wider team activities and developing self in order to build capacity for future needs of the team and maximise the benefits arising from climate action programmes through:
- Demonstrating a flexible approach to working from home and/or office as required, in support of service and corporate objectives.
- Driving high performance, strong engagement, and a commitment to continuous improvement– actively seeking ways of achieving greater outcomes – in support of the People Strategy and the council’s values.
