Chief Engineer – Mechanical Engineering | Birmingham (Hybrid)

We’re looking for an exceptional Chief Engineer to lead high-complexity mechanical engineering projects across transmission, driveline and actuation systems, driving technical excellence, client relationships, and the development of those around you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical work packages and projects to margin, being accountable to the operations board for outcomes
  • Check and approve precision 2D manufacturing drawings to the relevant standards
  • Utilise state-of-the-art simulation techniques and design tools to design, develop and prototype transmission, driveline and actuation systems
  • Lead multi-person and cross-functional projects through their full development cycle
  • Propose innovative R&D projects to the CTO and develop new market-leading solutions
  • Support business development. Scoping, resourcing and costing in response to customer RFQs
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key accounts to build and sustain revenue streams
  • Play an active role in the quality system, continuously improving technical and procedural capabilities
  • Mentor and develop others in drawing standards, technical reporting and professional growth
  • Represent the business through technical forums, conferences and white papers
  • Manage complex proposals and quotes, defining project strategy while mitigating technical and commercial risk

✅ What You’ll Need

  • Extensive experience developing transmission systems across at least two sectors: automotive, aerospace, off-highway, commercial vehicle, defence, clean energy and/or marine
  • High competency in design and CAE analysis of rotating systems
  • Adept in applying GD&T for prototype and production manufacturing across a range of components and materials
  • Strong track record of system integration projects delivered to scope and quality
  • Ability to own compelling system propositions spanning hydraulics, controls, test, development and electrified powertrain
  • A history of solving complex problems through new techniques, and coaching others to do the same
  • Experience managing large, multi-disciplinary projects through their complete development lifecycle
  • Working knowledge of key drivetrain software, SMT MASTA, Romax, Creo, UGNX, CATIA, Amesim, Recurdyn, MATLAB, Altair and/or Ansys
  • Commercial acumen with experience in generating and managing opportunities to successful conclusion
