Purpose of the Role

To carry out high-quality welding activities in accordance with approved welding procedures, project specifications, quality requirements, and site safety standards. The Welder will support the successful delivery of maintenance, construction, fabrication, and decommissioning projects while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and workmanship.

The role requires strict adherence to Sellafield site rules, Altrad procedures, and nuclear industry quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Welding Activities

  • Perform welding activities in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Carry out welding using processes such as:
  • MMA (Stick)
  • TIG (GTAW)
  • MIG/MAG (GMAW)
  • Flux Core (where applicable)
  • Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and other materials as specified by project requirements.
  • Produce welds that meet quality, safety, and client standards.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Prepare materials and components for welding operations.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all work complies with project quality requirements and welding procedures.
  • Conduct visual inspections of completed welds.
  • Support Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) activities where required.
  • Complete quality records and welding documentation accurately.
  • Report defects and support corrective actions when required.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with all Altrad, client, and Sellafield health and safety procedures.
  • Participate in pre-job briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Follow permit-to-work systems and risk assessments.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping within work areas.
  • Use appropriate PPE and safety equipment at all times.
  • Stop work and report unsafe conditions or practices.

Site Operations

  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Support fabrication, installation, maintenance, and decommissioning activities.
  • Assist with material handling and preparation activities when required.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Work within radiological controlled areas where authorised and trained.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver work safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Produce welds that achieve required quality standards.
  • Maintain compliance with project schedules and productivity targets.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture across the project.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Recognised apprenticeship or relevant welding qualification.
  • Current welding codings/certifications relevant to project requirements.
  • Experience in industrial, construction, engineering, energy, petrochemical, or nuclear environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Understanding of welding quality standards and inspection requirements.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, and quality.

Desirable

  • Nuclear industry experience.
  • Previous Sellafield site experience.
  • CSCS card or equivalent.
  • CCNSG Safety Passport.
  • IOSH Working Safely.
  • Experience working within highly regulated environments.
  • Confined Space, Working at Height, or MEWP certification.

Knowledge & Skills

  • MMA, TIG and/or MIG welding processes.
  • Fabrication and assembly techniques.
  • Technical drawing interpretation.
  • Welding quality control requirements.
  • Safe use of welding equipment and associated tools.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
