Neuroradiology Lead Nurse

The post holder will be the senior nurse in operational management, responsible for all operational issues associated with the nursing teams. This will involve providing guidance and support, working with nurses, other clinicians, multidisciplinary teams and other departments in the development of the nursing teams.
This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route. Sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds, and any role-specific criteria. For example, applicants for the Senior HCA role must be able to evidence a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the same role to qualify for sponsorship.
Applicants using a Graduate visa must have a minimum of 18 months remaining on the visa at the time of application.
Main duties of the job
- Operationally manage the nursing teams in the department of Neuroradiology across the Trust ensuring the delivery of modern, high quality, patient centred services.
- Provide day to day visible, accessible and authoritative nursing leadership in clinical areas.
- Deal efficiently and in a professional manner enquiries from both patients and staff internally and externally.

Job responsibilities
- Leads and articulates clear standards of care for their clinical area. Acts as a clinical expert and advises on the specialist equipment and techniques.
- Leads by example in the clinical setting, always maintaining professional behaviour and communication.
- Demonstrates clinical competence in the speciality area they manage.
- Ensures an environment that provides caring and compassionate care in their area.
- Ensures visibility in the clinical area, working with their team, supervising and supporting nurses, mentoring band 6s to model the behaviour and standards expected.
- Works in a clinical capacity and acts as a specialist nurse role model, delivering direct patient care when needed, participating in interdisciplinary discussion, relaying relevant information and ensuring appropriate referral, management and treatment of patients.
- Participates in the on‑call rota.
- Adheres to ionising radiation regulations and locally agreed protocols ensuring protection and monitoring devices are worn, possibly for long periods of time.
- Supports the expansion of the thrombectomy department to become a 24/7 service.
- Offers support and advice to the radiographers and others.
- Proactively talks to patients and their relatives related to their medical condition, patient experience and discharge plans, to provide leadership and advocacy.
- Ensures completion of Patient Voice/Family & Friends surveys. Reviews these scores and discusses them with the team to ensure improvements are made and good practice recognised.
- Effectively and empathetically responds to patients’ complaints, including written responses and inclusive with team learning following the complaint.
- Demonstrates a leadership style that is consistent and congruent with empowerment.
- Coordinates and manages the team within the department, ensuring cohesion of the multidisciplinary team. Assists and cooperates with wards and emergency departments, ensuring they are aware of scheduled times of patient procedures, delays or possible cancellations, keeping patients informed and not fasted unnecessarily.
- Is responsible for leading care within their area to support the harm‑free care agenda at UHS.
- Supports and assists in the education of all members of staff involved in the care of neuroradiology patients in the department, wards and neuro recovery.
- Presents risks relevant to their clinical area at site quality and safety meetings.
Person Specification
- Registered General Nurse on relevant part of the NMC register (level 1) – Degree/Diploma with significant post‑registration experience.
- Awareness of IRMER (Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations) and IRR99 (Ionising Radiation Regulations) and related issues pertaining to nursing staff.
- Specialist training in an area of practice Level 7 Post Graduate certificate/Master’s degree or equivalent of working towards.
- Teaching qualification (ENB 998, C&G 7303, PGCE or equivalent).
