L&Q is one of the UK’s largest housing associations and providers of social and affordable homes. We house around 250,000 people primarily across Greater London and Greater Manchester. Our purpose is simple – to provide social homes and landlord services that everyone can be proud of.

We are looking for a highly skilled, driven and experienced Senior Environmental Manager to join our Sustainability Team. This vital and influential role will oversee environmental management and performance across all work‑related operations, including construction and operational activities.

Past achievements:

  • Launching a £3 billion, 15‑year major works investment programme that will make sure every resident’s home is safe, decent and more energy efficient.
  • Delivering x new homes, of which x% were affordable, across our focus geographies of London & the South East, and Manchester.
  • Improving the quality and responsiveness of our repairs service through a change programme which has already delivered a 20% increase in first‑time fix on day‑to‑day repairs.

We have committed to investing significant sums to bring our homes and services in line with changing regulatory standards. The successful candidate will be joining at a pivotal moment, as we begin the first year of our new 5‑Year Environment & Climate Change Strategic Plan. Building on the work that has gone before, teams are moving deliverables from strategy to delivery, embedding activities and objectives across the organisation. Central to this is the delivery of strengthened Environmental Management, now sitting newly in the central Strategy & Performance directorate, with the commitment to develop and maintain a new Environmental Management System.

About the Team

The Sustainability team sits within our wider Strategy & Performance directorate, which oversees the delivery of L&Q’s five‑year Corporate Strategy. The directorate oversees strategy development and delivery, business planning and performance reporting, the group’s sustainability efforts to achieve net zero carbon and respond to the risks associated with climate change, manages the group’s policy development framework as well as oversee our portfolio and Transformation and Change programmes.

The successful candidate will report into the Group Head of Sustainability, and will be joining an agile, high‑performing and values driven team that not only helps shape strategic thought, but then translates this into delivery so we achieve the best total cost solution for our customers through reliable, consistent, and repeatable products and services.

If this sounds like you, we would love for you to apply!

Your impact in the role:

  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and company policies, deliver and manage an Environmental Management System.
  • Develop and implement environmental action plans in alignment with environmental legislation and internal sustainability policies.
  • Provide expert environmental advice and support and drive continuous improvement.
  • Engage with internal teams and external stakeholders to implement best practice and contribute to the organisation’s environmental objectives.
  • Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of the organisation, of the impact of emerging environmental issues and ensure members of responsible business areas and supply chain are appropriately trained on environmental issues and responsibilities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting L&Q’s approach to environmental sustainability, delivering analysis and strengthening reporting across a wide range of business areas including new development, procurement, supply chain, and maintenance.
  • Evaluating current policies and practices, ensuring that strategies, plans and performance indicators that are developed are underpinned by high‑quality data analysis and forecasting. This will be in line with strategic priorities and to meet expectations from stakeholders such as investors, internal governance groups, and emerging government policy and reporting standards.
  • Completing annual carbon reporting (in line with Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting) and climate risk reporting for use in monitoring, disclosing, and improving performance.
  • Using and developing internal and external tools to deliver carbon emissions reporting, forecasting and modelling to support both the delivery and ongoing monitoring of our roadmap to net zero, as well as bringing together sources of information to assess and identify mitigation measures relating to the risk of flood, overheating and other climate risks to our residents.
  • Providing technical expertise, guidance and support when collaborating closely with the Lead Sustainability Programme Manager and Sustainability Manager, as well as teams across the business, including Development and Construction, Maintenance, L&Q Energy, GIS and Finance. Initial priorities will include waste, energy and water performance reporting for supply chain and construction sites.
  • Preparing briefing notes on relevant sustainability regulations, developing materials and content on sustainability priorities, and delivering strong communication in order to coordinate with cross‑functional teams.
  • Ensuring that resident benefit is at the heart of everything we do, and driving forward both innovative and well understood mechanisms to support a fair transition to net zero.

What you’ll bring:

  • A degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management, Sustainability, or a related field, and professional membership with a recognised environmental body (ISEP) – Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or Practitioner level minimum (PISEP)
  • Experience with ISO 14001 and/or ISO 50001 systems, including the completion of environmental impact and risk assessments.
  • Experience in a similar role with proven track record of delivering successful sustainability projects.
