Job Description:

For one of our globally leading tech clients we are urgently looking for an experienced PLC Automation Engineer for a long contract based in Wakefield, UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and repair automation and control systems
  • Track and analyze Material Handling Equipment (MHE) performance metrics
  • Collaborate with the EU Controls network to ensure system reliability
  • Develop and present data visualizations for troubleshooting and performance insights
  • Participate in and lead continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate system documentation and backup libraries
  • Support installation and commissioning of new automation equipment
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional and global teams
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Develop and optimize PLC code compliant with IEC 61131‑3 standards

A Day in the Life

  • Act as the site expert for automation systems
  • Ensure smooth operation of conveyors, sortation systems, and robotics
  • Diagnose failures and implement technical solutions
  • Train Engineering Technicians on troubleshooting and preventive maintenance
  • Continuously identify and implement process improvements

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience with PLC‑controlled automation systems
  • Hands‑on experience with conveyors and sortation systems
  • Knowledge of material handling and flow optimization
  • Experience with tools/technologies such as:
  • Microsoft Office & project management tools
  • Ladder Logic & structured programming
  • SCADA systems (e.g., Ignition) and HMI
  • Industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, AS-i)
  • VFDs, safety systems, and I/O devices
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal)
