Assistant Director, Head of Long-Term Savings Policy

Company: The ABI
Apply for the Assistant Director, Head of Long-Term Savings Policy
Location: Greater London
Job Description:

As Assistant Director and Head of Long‑Term Savings Policy, you’ll jointly lead the ABI’s pensions policy portfolio with another Assistant Director. You will be shaping strategy across pensions policy, including auto‑enrolment, retirement solutions, investment and pension risk transfer. You will co‑head a team to develop and champion influential, evidence‑based policy positions, represent the industry to government, Parliament and regulators, and build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across the market.

This is a high‑profile leadership role for an experienced policy professional who enjoys working collaboratively. It is also an opportunity to shape a highly visible and strategically important area of UK public policy with profound implications for individuals, markets and the wider economy.

What’s the job?

  • Provide strategic oversight of policy development initiatives impacting the Long‑Term Savings market, particularly on policy covering defined contribution and defined benefit pensions, pension investment, the Pension Schemes Bill and associated secondary legislation and regulation, the Pensions Commission, retail investment and advice and guidance.
  • Lead the ABI’s relationship with relevant government departments (e.g. DWP, HMT) and other key stakeholders, including trade associations to influence policy work and ensure alignment of messaging.
  • Lead policy debates at ABI Committees and Working Groups to develop and advance credible, evidence‑based policy positions.
  • Lead the work of senior ABI Committees in your portfolio, and feed into the Long‑Term Savings Board and Pension Insurance and Investment Board.
  • Oversee thought leadership reports, proactive research, and the ABI’s response to all Government and regulatory initiatives impacting the long‑term savings market.
  • Represent the interests of the UK’s long‑term savings market to key stakeholders (government, regulators, the third sector), in the media, and by undertaking high‑profile speaking engagements at conferences and events.
  • Develop and motivate a team of high performing individuals, ensuring that team members grow and develop and work in a way consistent with the ABI Values, leading by example.

What skills do you need?

  • Policy expertise – you can digest large quantities of detailed material and present it to members and Government to make it easily understood by all, having worked in a complex area of policy or regulation. You understand the markets, policy and regulation regarding pensions and/or wider financial services system in the UK.
  • Leadership – you can manage, develop and retain a highly motivated and performing team to plan, prioritise and deliver work across a wide range of issues and projects.
  • Strategic thinking – you can identify and act on opportunities and risks that may have not fully crystallised for the industry and have the tenacity to see objectives through over an extended time period.
  • Lobbying – you can persuade others by winning the confidence of senior people in member firms, Government, regulators and elsewhere, and to argue persuasively for the industry’s interests.
  • Relationship management – you build and maintain enduring relationships with key stakeholders, as well as with colleagues and team members to build support for ideas, to plan and implement future change and to get things done.

We encourage you to apply, even if you don’t have all the skills above right now.
