HSE Advisor (Health, Safety & Environmental)

St Albans

£40,000 – £45,000

Full-time, Permanent (45 hours/week)

We are working with an established engineering and infrastructure organisation to recruit an experienced HSE Advisor to support a range of civil engineering and infrastructure projects. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-resourced, people-focused business delivering complex works across regulated environments and long-term framework agreements.

The role

As HSE Advisor, you will play a key role in supporting site teams and regional operations to maintain and improve health, safety and environmental standards across multiple projects. You will help ensure compliance with legislation, promote a positive safety culture, and drive continuous improvement through inspections, reporting, investigations, and advisory support.

You will act as a visible presence across sites, helping to identify hazards, reduce risk, and support managers and operatives in embedding best practice.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide competent, consistent HSE advice to site teams and management
  • Carry out regular site inspections, audits, and advisory visits
  • Support incident reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis
  • Produce HSE alerts and communications to promote learning and prevention
  • Monitor and report on HSE performance metrics and regional trends
  • Support monthly reporting, statistics, and safety performance updates
  • Ensure accurate logging and tracking of incidents and corrective actions
  • Support engagement with enforcement bodies and ensure actions are closed out
  • Assist with occupational health, wellbeing initiatives, and safety campaigns

About you

Essential

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent minimum)
  • IOSH (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of HSE legislation and compliance requirements
  • Experience in a client-facing or site-based advisory role
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills across all levels
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, reporting tools)
  • CSCS Safety Professional Card
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team
  • Strong analytical and reporting ability

Desirable

  • Experience within civil engineering / infrastructure environments (rail experience beneficial)
  • Environmental qualification (CEnv or equivalent desirable)
  • Incident investigation training (e.g. TOPSET or equivalent)
  • Training/assessing qualification (PTTLS/AET Level 3)
