Role: Director of Project Management (Payments)

Location: Central London (hybrid)

Base Salary: Up to £150,000 + bonus

A leading payments firm are offering the opportunity for a Director of Project Management to lead large-scale, complex initiatives across its growing payments portfolio. This role will oversee a portfolio of strategic programs spanning payment processing, fintech integrations, regulatory change, and platform transformation.

You’ll be responsible for building and leading a high-performing PMO, driving delivery excellence, and partnering with senior stakeholders across product, engineering, compliance, and commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities of the Director of Project Management include:

  • Build, hire, and lead a high-performing team of project and programme managers, setting clear expectations and supporting their growth
  • Create a strong, collaborative delivery culture, introducing practical frameworks, tools, and best practices where needed
  • Oversee delivery of key payments initiatives (e.g. integrations, platform improvements, regulatory changes), ensuring steady progress and alignment
  • Work closely with stakeholders across product, engineering, compliance, and commercial teams to prioritise and deliver effectively
  • Keep projects on track in terms of timelines, scope, and outcomes, with a focus on pragmatic execution
  • Identify, manage, and communicate risks and dependencies in a clear and proactive way
  • Contribute to evolving project management practices, helping the team scale in a sustainable way
  • Support initiatives across payment systems and partners, with an understanding of the broader payments landscape

Key Requirements of the Director of Project Management include:

  • 6+ years in project/program management, with significant leadership experience
  • Strong background in payments, fintech, or financial services
  • Proven track record delivering large-scale, cross-functional programs
  • Deep understanding of payment systems, infrastructure, and regulatory landscape
  • Experience building and leading PMO functions
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills

Desirable:

  • Experience with digital transformation or platform modernization
  • Exposure to APIs, open banking, or embedded finance
  • Professional certifications (PMP, PRINCE2, Agile, etc.)
