Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic safety practitioner to join our small team as deputy to the Departmental Safety Manager (DSM). The role holder will assist the DSM in supporting academics, researchers, managers, staff, students, and others to understand and fulfil their health and safety responsibilities, and will report on health and safety to the Head of Department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the DSM in supporting academics, researchers, managers, staff, students, and others to understand and fulfil their health and safety responsibilities.
  • Report on health and safety to the Head of Department.
  • Provide guidance on safety management and risk control, supported by expertise in risks from biological materials, chemicals, and radiation.
  • Manage health and safety in a multi‑site, multi‑disciplinary environment and improve safety systems and culture.
  • Deliver training and coaching on health and safety matters.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and students, adapt to changing demands, solve problems, and prioritise work based on risks.
  • Take the lead in risk control where necessary.

Qualifications

  • Educated at degree level or equivalent in a scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of health and safety management systems and standards.
  • Proven track record of dealing with all aspects of health and safety.
  • Experience providing training and coaching.
  • Understanding of how to merge good safety practice with research and teaching.
  • Experience working in a scientific research environment is advantageous but not essential.
  • Excellent communication skills with staff and students at all levels.
  • Self‑motivated, able to work independently and as part of a small team, and willing to take lead on risk control.
  • Willing to complete training provided by the University Safety Office and become familiar with significant risk issues in the Department.
