Our client operates at the forefront of the UK’s nuclear energy transformation, supporting the development and deployment of next-generation technologies including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). THE HEALTH & SAFETY MANAGER ROLE
As a Health & Safety Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of occupational health & safety across a major nuclear programme. Working closely with the HSSE Lead and wider project teams, you will drive a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance across all phases of the project lifecycle – from design through to construction and delivery. This is a highly visible role where you will engage with regulators, stakeholders, and supply chain partners, influencing safety strategy and ensuring best practice across a complex, high-hazard environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the HSSE Lead in delivering health & safety strategy across the programme
- Champion a strong, positive safety culture across project teams and supply chain partners
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations (2015), HSE legislation, and relevant standards
- Establish and manage governance frameworks for monitoring and reporting H&S performance
- Lead engagement with regulatory bodies including HSE and ONR
- Identify, assess, and mitigate health & safety risks across all project phases
- Collaborate with contractors and suppliers to ensure consistent safety standards
- Provide H&S input into design reviews, constructability assessments, and project milestones
- Develop and track KPIs and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement
- Deliver training, inductions, and safety-related materials across the programme
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Proven experience in health & safety within nuclear or high-hazard industries (e.g. oil & gas, defence, infrastructure)
- Strong knowledge of ISO 45001 and occupational health & safety systems
- Extensive experience with CDM Regulations (2015) and large-scale construction projects
- Experience engaging with regulators (HSE, ONR, EA/NRW)
- Strong analytical skills – able to interpret data and identify risk trends
- Excellent communication skills – able to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to promote and embed a positive safety culture
- Comfortable working in complex, fast-paced and evolving environments
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
- Experience on major infrastructure or nuclear programmes
- Knowledge of safety, licensing, and assurance frameworks
- Experience contributing to large-scale transformation or greenfield projects
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Health & Safety, Engineering, Science, or related field
- Chartered Membership of IOSH (or equivalent)
