Overview

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service seeks an outstanding and forward‑thinking estates/property professional to lead the Estates function. The role delivers the Service’s vision of a fit‑for‑purpose estate that supports community and enabling offers and meets the needs of a diverse workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the proactive, user‑focused Estates Team to support the Fire Authority’s purpose of reducing risk and saving lives.
  • Oversee an estate of 23 community fire stations, a fleet workshop and a training centre from the shared headquarters with Sussex Police in Lewes.
  • Develop and shape the new estates strategy, coordinating the Service‑wide environmental and sustainability action plan and reducing environmental impact.
  • Manage capital and revenue budgets, provide cost‑efficient technical solutions, introduce innovation and optimise estate use.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Ensure statutory compliance across the estate and manage statutory and grant funding applications.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience leading an estates function and delivering change, with credibility and influence at senior levels.
  • Ability to scrutinise detail while operating at a strategic level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to present complex technical issues succinctly and clearly.
  • Appropriate professional qualification or degree and/or significant experience in client‑side estates & project management in public and private sectors.
  • Track record of delivering high‑quality, complex, major capital construction projects in occupied operational buildings, and knowledge of statutory requirements and facilities team oversight.
  • Knowledge of budget management, construction contracts, complex mechanical & electrical systems, facilities management, public sector procurement, and managing multidisciplinary external consultant teams.
  • Valid driving licence and ability to travel throughout East Sussex.
