Job Purpose

A qualified Quality Engineer with experience of developing and implementing quality and business improvements in an aerospace manufacturing environment is required. The ideal candidate will have commercial awareness and excellent communication skills, with the ability to develop business relationships to promote growth while maintaining quality standards. The role requires an initiative‑taking individual who can work without supervision and make effective decisions to minimise quality‑related problems.

Role Purpose

To manage and maintain all company‑ and customer‑owned tooling, ensuring it is serviceable, compliant and available to support production, while also supporting product verification activities through inspection and quality control.

Role Summary

The QI & Tooling Engineer is responsible for the control, maintenance, calibration and repair of all tooling, alongside supporting inspection activities within the manufacturing environment. The role includes performing product inspections, verifying conformity to specifications, and ensuring that tooling used in production is maintained in a controlled condition, thereby supporting both operational delivery and product quality.

Key Responsibilities – Tooling

  • Maintain full control of all tooling, including:
    • Teledyne‑owned tooling
    • Customer‑owned tooling
  • Ensure all tooling is uniquely identified, correctly stored and protected from damage or deterioration.
  • Manage the tooling register, ensuring accurate records of tooling status, location, condition and ownership.
  • Define and manage calibration and verification requirements, ensuring tooling requiring calibration is included within the calibration system and remains in valid calibration status.
  • Coordinate tooling inspections, maintenance, repair and replacement.
  • Remove defective tooling from service and control to prevent use.

Key Responsibilities – Inspection / Quality

  • Perform inspection activities, including:
    • In‑process inspection
    • Final inspection
    • Incoming inspection where required
  • Verify product conformity against drawings, specifications and work instructions.
  • Record inspection results in line with company requirements.
  • Raise non‑conformances (NCRs) where product does not meet requirements.
  • Support MRB/concession processes, root‑cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100 and customer requirements (Airbus, GKN, etc.).

Operational Responsibilities

  • Support production teams with tooling issues, inspection queries and product conformity concerns.
  • Ensure tooling availability aligns with production demand.
  • Identify and escalate risks related to tooling condition, inspection capacity and product quality.
  • Support the introduction of new tooling and processes.

Compliance & Control

  • Ensure tooling control meets AS9100, calibration system and customer‑specific requirements.
  • Ensure inspection activities are traceable, recorded and compliant with defined requirements.
  • Maintain control of customer‑owned tooling in line with contractual obligations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve tooling reliability, inspection efficiency and defect prevention.
  • Support reduction of scrap, rework and tooling‑related defects.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience in aerospace or manufacturing environment.
  • Understanding of tooling control, inspection processes and calibration systems.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good organisational and problem‑solving skills.
