Lecturer in 16-18 EMSOL Maths (English & Maths for Speakers of Other Languages)

Full-time | City College Norwich

At City College Norwich, we are committed to providing an inclusive, supportive, and ambitious learning environment where every student can succeed.

We are seeking a skilled and reflective Maths Lecturer to join our 16–18 EMSOL (English & Maths for Speakers of Other Languages) provision. This is a unique opportunity to work within a specialist ESOL setting, delivering maths to learners for whom English is an additional language, while also playing a key role in shaping and coordinating maths delivery across the area.

This role is ideal for a maths specialist who is passionate about inclusive education and motivated to adapt their practice to meet the needs of diverse and often vulnerable learners. Experience working with ESOL learners (some of whom have very low levels of English language) is essential.

About the Role

You will deliver maths across all Entry Levels and Level 1, supporting learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds and varying levels of English language proficiency.

As the dedicated maths lecturer within EMSOL, you will also take on Course Leadership responsibilities for maths, helping to coordinate and develop provision across the area.

This includes:

  • Supporting consistency and quality in maths delivery
  • Working collaboratively with ESOL colleagues delivering lower-level maths
  • Contributing to internal quality assurance and standardisation processes
  • Helping to shape the development of maths pathways within the curriculum

This is a unique role combining specialisms in both ESOL and Maths, offering the opportunity to make a significant impact on both learner experience and curriculum development.

Key Responsibilities

·      Teaching and Learning: Deliver engaging and inclusive maths lessons to 16–18 learners, adapting content to support varying levels of English proficiency.

·      Course Leadership: Coordinate maths provision within the EMSOL area, supporting consistency, planning, and curriculum development across levels.

·      Differentiation and Language Development: Design and deliver lessons that support learners to develop both mathematical understanding and subject-specific language.

·      Quality Assurance: Contribute to internal quality processes, including standardisation, assessment practice, and quality improvement activity.

·      Learner Progress: Monitor and track progress, implementing timely interventions to support achievement.

·      Engagement and Attendance: Use inclusive and motivational strategies to improve attendance and learner participation.

·      Collaboration: Work closely with EMSOL colleagues to create a cohesive and supportive learning experience for students.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong subject expertise with a collaborative and adaptable approach.

  • Qualifications: A recognised teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards) and a relevant maths qualification.
  • Experience: Experience of delivering Functional Skills Maths from Award in Maths and Entry Level 1 up to Level 1.
  • Specialist Teaching Skills: Ability to adapt teaching effectively for learners with English as an additional language, including supporting the development of mathematical vocabulary.
  • Emerging Leadership: Experience of, or interest in, coordinating provision or supporting colleagues to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Understanding Learners: Awareness of the barriers faced by learners with diverse educational and personal backgrounds, and the ability to respond with patience and sensitivity.
  • Communication: Ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly, accessibly, and with an awareness of language barriers.
  • Collaboration: A team-focused approach, with the ability to work positively alongside colleagues in a shared curriculum area.
  • Resilience and Flexibility: Calm, adaptable, and solution-focused in response to challenge.

Why Join Us?

·      Specialist Role: Be part of a dedicated EMSOL team, developing innovative approaches to teaching maths through language.

·      Broader Impact: Play a key role in shaping and coordinating maths provision across the area.

·      Collaborative Environment: Work within a supportive and inclusive department.

·      Professional Development: Develop both your teaching practice and leadership skills.

If you are passionate about teaching maths and want to make a meaningful difference within a specialist and evolving area of provision, we would love to hear from you.
