Full‑time, Permanent, 37.5 hours per week. Working hours Monday to Friday 07:15–15:05 (flexible working considered). Salary £50,008 – £56,908 per annum. Job Ref 360-A-11464-A.

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity for a leader to join the Division of Medicine at West Hertfordshire NHS Teaching Trust. The Senior Nurse/Charge Nurse will lead a medicine ward, ensuring safe, high‑quality, person‑centred care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the performance of the team within a medicine ward, enhancing patient experience and improving clinical outcomes.
  • Take day‑to‑day responsibility for safe, effective, person‑centred care and for ensuring compliance with mandatory training.
  • Manage the clinical area’s resources, prioritise workloads and use initiative in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Promote dignity, patient safety and a positive patient and carer experience across the ward.
  • Act as a visible, proactive, and accessible leader and clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support the personal and professional development of nursing staff and encourage ongoing learning and development.
  • Contribute to organisational priorities such as improved patient flow, reduced sickness absence, staff retention, and safe workforce deployment.
  • Participate actively in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, including the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).
  • Foster innovation and promote diversity, inclusion and equality within the workplace.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered General Nurse.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Degree in Nursing or related subject, or working towards one.
  • Knowledge of negotiating and motivating groups and individuals to deliver on agreed objectives.
  • Understanding and experience of managing casemix and skillmix according to competing clinical priorities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of decisions made in a variety of clinical settings, ensuring user safety is at the forefront of planning.

  • Hospital cleanliness standards.
  • Nursing agenda.
  • Understanding and some experience of clinical governance processes in relation to speciality.
  • Experience as Band 6 within speciality.
  • Line management of staff.
  • Management of complaints and local resolution.
  • You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
