Job Description

The Times Product Design team is a collaborative group of about twelve designers working on core reading experiences, subscriber journeys, and editorial tools used by the newsroom daily. We design close to the action, working alongside editorial, product, engineering, and data teams to build digital experiences trusted by millions of readers. The work is varied, supportive, and design standards are exceptionally high.

Your role

Day to day you will

  • Lead the end-to-end design strategy for a defined product area, collaborating closely with cross‑functional partners from early conceptual thinking through to final shipping.
  • Set an exceptional standard for interaction design, visual execution, and prototyping, serving as a quality benchmark for the wider team.
  • Collaborate with user researchers to frame critical insights and translate reader feedback into impactful product decisions.
  • Mentor less senior designers through regular design critiques and 1:1 sessions to support their growth and build team capabilities.
  • Contribute to our shared design system, shaping patterns that other teams use and continuously pushing our practice forward.

What we’re looking for from you

  • A comprehensive portfolio of shipped digital product work at scale, demonstrating user‑centered design.
  • Proven experience leading the design strategy for a distinct product area and measuring improvement of user outcomes.
  • Strong research instincts, clear understanding of what to test, when, and why, and a history of partnering effectively with user researchers.
  • Demonstrated mentorship experience, formal or informal, showing a passion for growing other designers.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder alignment skills, confidently holding ground and bringing editors, product directors, and engineers along on the journey.
  • Active curiosity about emerging tools like AI and their application in day‑to‑day workflows, backed by genuine exploration and experimentation.

Benefits

  • Private medical insurance, including coverage for pre‑existing conditions.
  • Discounted gym memberships, free ClassPass at Home, weekly in‑person/virtual exercise classes.
  • ‘Bikes for Work’ and ‘Electric Car’ scheme.
  • Up to 60% discount on Harper Collins books.
  • Maternity leave up to 18 weeks full basic salary and paternity leave up to 2 weeks.
  • Access to exclusive events and competitions with brands such as talkSPORT, Virgin Radio UK & The Times. Weekly virtual panel chats with top journalists and celebrities.
  • Access to wellbeing benefits such as EAP, physio/massage and counselling.
  • Generous pension scheme with employer contributions of up to 5%.
  • Wide range of training available, plus full LinkedIn Learning access.
  • 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays and up to 4 volunteering days per year.

We are committed to providing an inclusive recruitment process.
