Lead Veterinary Surgeon – Small Animal

Salary up to £80,000 DOE, welcome bonus of up to £5,000, and relocation allowance of up to £5,000

Practice Overview

Portchester Vets is a long‑standing local practice that primarily cares for cats and dogs, with occasional rabbit cases. The practice features a dedicated lab, X‑ray suite, and a range of diagnostic equipment including digital and dental X‑ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, K‑laser and an in‑house IDEXX laboratory. With supportive links to nearby practices, referral support is readily available when needed.

How You’ll Make a Difference

As Lead Veterinary Surgeon you will be the most senior clinician, responsible for leading clinical standards, governance and the delivery of outstanding patient and client care. You will oversee complex cases, provide clinical guidance, and work closely with senior practice leadership to drive continuous improvement in clinical quality and outcomes.

  • Full‑time position, 38 hours across four days.
  • Three Saturdays per year: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM.
  • No out‑of‑hours or on‑call commitments.
  • Part‑time applications also welcome.

You Might Be a Great Fit If…

  • Veterinary degree and registration with the RCVS, with significant experience in small or mixed‑animal practice and advanced surgical and medical capability.
  • Proven experience mentoring, coaching and supporting veterinary colleagues.
  • Strong leadership, communication and decision‑making skills.
  • Experience contributing to or leading clinical governance, audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to manage clinical complaints and provide professional guidance in complex situations.
  • Professionalism, integrity and a commitment to the highest standards of patient and client care.
