An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and enthusiastic Orthopaedic Technician to join our busy Trauma and Orthopaedics service at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. Working across both sites, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients attending fracture clinics, orthopaedic clinics, wards, theatres, emergency departments and paediatric services.
This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, providing specialist orthopaedic care to a diverse patient population. You will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive casting, splinting, bracing and orthotic service, including the application of both routine and complex casts and specialist techniques such as Ponseti casting and Total Contact Casting.
You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to support patients who may be experiencing anxiety, pain or distress following injury or trauma. You will also act as a role model within the department, supporting and guiding colleagues, contributing to service improvement initiatives, and maintaining the highest professional and clinical standards.
Main duties of the job
As an autonomous practitioner you will assess patient needs, plan and prioritise your workload effectively, and provide expert clinical advice and education to patients, families and carers. You will work closely with medical, nursing, therapy and orthotic teams to ensure patients receive safe, effective and compassionate care throughout their treatment journey.
- Plan and deliver casting, splinting, bracing and orthotic interventions.
- Apply routine and complex casts; perform specialist techniques such as Ponseti and Total Contact Casting.
- Provide wound care, removal of K‑wires, clips and sutures where appropriate.
- Educate patients, families and carers on care and self-management.
- Act as a role model, support and guide colleagues, and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Person specification
Education / Qualifications
- Holder of British Casting Certificate.
- Focus Rigidity Casting (BOA accredited).
Skills / Abilities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Experience / Knowledge
- Wide range of knowledge and experience in the field of casting and orthotics.
- Advanced specialist plaster applications – experience of Ponseti and Total Contact Casting.
