Job Description:

TRUSTEE – EAST ANGLIA YOUTH ROWING (EAYR)

About East Anglia Youth Rowing

East Anglia Youth Rowing is a registered charity dedicated to introducing children and young people to the sport of rowing, developing their skills, building character, and creating lasting friendships through water-based activities. We operate across East Anglia, providing accessible, high-quality rowing experiences to young people of all backgrounds and abilities.

Rowing teaches resilience, teamwork, discipline, and determination—values that extend far beyond the water. We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to experience these benefits, regardless of their circumstances.

The Trustee Role

We are seeking experienced, committed trustees who will help EAYR grow its impact and reach. Trustees provide governance, strategic direction, and support to the charity, ensuring we operate effectively, sustainably, and in alignment with our charitable objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Governance

  • Provide strategic direction and help set the charity’s priorities and long-term vision
  • Ensure the charity complies with charity law, data protection, and safeguarding regulations
  • Monitor and evaluate the charity’s performance against objectives
  • Review financial health and ensure sound financial management
  • Attend trustee board meetings (typically 4–6 per year)

Support & Advocacy

  • Champion EAYR within your networks and help raise its profile
  • Contribute specialist expertise relevant to your background (finance, marketing, HR, fundraising, sports development, etc.)
  • Support fundraising efforts and identify potential funding opportunities and partners
  • Act as an ambassador for the charity in the community

Oversight & Accountability

  • Review and approve annual accounts, budgets, and key policies
  • Ensure safeguarding of children and young people is a priority across all activities
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative board culture

What We Value

  • Commitment to our mission: A genuine passion for introducing young people to rowing and developing their potential
  • Diverse experience: We welcome trustees with varied professional and voluntary backgrounds—finance, business, education, sports development, marketing, HR, and beyond
  • Strategic thinking: Ability to think about the big picture while managing operational details
  • Collaboration: Working effectively with fellow trustees, the executive team, and volunteers
  • Community focus: Understanding of and commitment to the local community we serve
  • Integrity and accountability: Upholding the highest standards of governance and transparency

Who We’re Looking For

Ideal candidates may have:

  • Experience in business, management, finance, fundraising, or marketing
  • Background in education, sports, youth development, or the not-for-profit sector
  • Fundraising or grant‑writing experience
  • IT or digital marketing expertise
  • Legal or HR knowledge
  • Passion for sport, outdoor activities, or youth engagement
  • Connections within East Anglia
  • You don’t need all of these — enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to contribute are the most important attributes.

Time Commitment & Support

  • Board meetings: 4–6 per year (typically 2 hours each, location flexible)
  • Preparation: 1–2 hours per meeting for reading papers and preparation
  • Additional involvement: Varies by role and interests (e.g., committee work, fundraising, mentoring). You decide your level of involvement

Location

Some meetings may be in‑person (Cambridge area); others conducted online or hybrid. You must be based in the East Anglia region of the UK.

Support

Full induction, access to trustee training, and mentoring from experienced board members.

What We Offer

  • Meaningful impact: Directly shape the future of young people in East Anglia
  • Professional development: Opportunities to build governance, leadership, and fundraising skills
  • Supportive community: Work alongside passionate trustees and staff
  • Flexibility: Tailored roles based on your expertise and availability
  • Transparency: Clear communication and inclusive board culture

Accessibility & Inclusion

EAYR is committed to creating an inclusive board that reflects the diversity of our community. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and will consider reasonable adjustments to support your participation.
