Job overview

Are you able to motivate and support service users in the early stages of their admission into secure services? The post holder will work within the ward supporting service user’s admission and during their progression on the ward. The role will include coming up with innovative ways to engage service users with complex needs, with opportunities to assess users prior to admission in external settings. Your input will set them up for their journey through secure care, giving them the opportunity and a stepping stone to progress into less restrictive environments. The service prides itself on supporting the recovery of working‑age males detained under both criminal and civil sections of the Mental Health Act; users may experience severe mental health problems, acute illness and challenging behaviours. As a senior member you will represent your profession, act as a role model, and support the trauma‑informed care philosophy of the secure service and the wider organisational values. You will partner with multidisciplinary teams to promote recovery and address inequalities such as employment, education and physical health.

Main duties of the job

The lead occupational therapist will hold operational and professional responsibility for the service within the Men’s In‑patient Medium Secure Service at the Tamarind Centre, an 89‑bed medium secure hospital for males. The role involves delivering a competent, efficient occupational therapy service, working with a multidisciplinary leadership team (lead psychiatrist, clinical nurse manager, psychologist, matron) to provide safe, effective, caring care. You will lead professional development, embed an evidence base and the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), and enhance the occupational therapy pathway across the secure care service.

Working for our organisation

The successful candidate may work within the Reach Out Model of Care, a partnership with Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and St Andrews Health Care.
