Are you able to motivate and support service users in the early stages of their admission into secure services?

The post holder will work within the establishment of the ward supporting service user’s admission and during their progression on the ward. The role will include coming up with innovative ways to engage service users with complex needs. There will be the opportunity to assess service users prior to admission, in external settings.

Your input will set them up for their journey through secure care; giving them the opportunity and a stepping stone to progress into less restrictive environments.

The service prides itself on striving to support the recovery of working age males detained under both criminal and civil sections of the Mental Health Act. The service users we care for experience severe and enduring mental health problems, acute mental illness and often present with behaviours that are challenging.

As a senior member of the service, you will represent your profession and act as a role model in a manner that positively reflects the trauma informed care philosophy of the secure service and the wider values of the organization. You will be engaged in meeting the service and trust strategies to promote recovery, address inequalities such as employment, education and physical health.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Occupational Therapist in our Secure Care and Offender Health directorate at the Tamarind Centre, Bordesley Green.

The Tamarind is an 89 bedded Medium Secure Hospital caring for males. We are incredibly proud of our diverse and multicultural service at the Tamarind located in the heart of East Birmingham.

The post holder will hold operational and professional responsibility for the occupational therapy service within the Men’s In-patient Medium Secure Service at the Tamarind Centre. They will be responsible for the delivery of an efficiently administered and professionally competent Occupational Therapy service.

The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary leadership team which involves a lead psychiatrist, clinical nurse manager, psychologist and matron. These roles will be key to delivering a well led service which is responsive to patient need, is effective, safe and caring.

The post holder will lead on driving forward professional leadership and management to the Occupational Therapy service at the Tamarind Centre providing patient centred care.

You will continue to embed an evidence base within the team, and developing the use of the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). There will also be opportunity to enhance the Occupational Therapy Pathway across the secure care occupational therapy service.

As a result the Trust offers new staff an excellent experience across a variety of provision which incorporates community psychological intervention services, a community outreach team (FIRST), Liaison and Diversion service, prison health care service together with inpatient services which provide low and medium secure services for young persons, women and men.

Alongside of working for BSMHFT the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the Reach Out Model of Care. Reach Out is a new care model which is a partnership between Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and St Andrews Health Care. BSMHFT is the lead provider in this collaboration.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

  • BSC (Hons) in Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence of registration with the HCPC or willingness to undertake
  • Evidence of postgraduate training in leadership and or management

Experience

  • Can give examples of or can evidence using a CPD portfolio
  • Evidence of Research
