Specialist Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Support Worker

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Nursing Team as a Support Worker to care for patients diagnosed with long‑term IBD chronic conditions.

The post holder will support patients requiring advice and support whilst also supporting staff and escalating any concerns to the Clinical Nurse Specialist and Gastroenterology Consultants if necessary.

The post holder will contribute, as a member of the IBD team, to promote a high quality and safe specialist service delivery.

Main duties of the job

  • Communicate with a range of people on a range of matters using appropriate verbal and non‑verbal methods, in a variety of situations that may involve understanding and overcoming physical and psychological barriers.
  • Recognise, acknowledge and take appropriate action reporting to a qualified member of the team when information is controversial, sensitive or distressing.
  • Take messages from the IBD telephone helpline and prescription line and respond as appropriate.
  • Deliveries to other departments including outpatient prescriptions to Wells pharmacy, inpatient prescriptions to pharmacy and the Diagnostic Day Unit (DDU).
  • Respond to emails for Homecare prescription requests, print pre‑populated prescriptions ready for prescribing, ensure up‑to‑date bloods have been performed.
  • Prepare DDU IV infusion prescriptions, prepped ready to be prescribed, document prescription in the traceability book before delivery.
  • Input patients on biologic treatment to Blueteq system.
  • Collect paperwork/admin from medical secretaries.
  • Maintain appropriate and sufficient patient information literature on the Gastro ward and in outpatient clinic areas.
  • Therapy Audit (TA) monitoring to include the inputting and updating of patients medication and creating letters on Medisec for blood reminders to be sent to patient and GP.

Qualifications & Training

  • NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care
  • Care Certificate
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills required.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software especially.
  • Understanding of procedures in relation to data protection / confidentiality.
  • Previous experience of hospital computer systems.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times in respect of the Data Protection Act (1998)
  • Employ tact and patience when dealing with difficult situations remaining polite and understanding at all times.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
