About The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Steward to join our Network Management team in East Sussex. In this role, you’ll take ownership of a defined geographic area, acting as a key point of contact for local councillors, parish representatives and residents. You’ll play a vital role in maintaining the safety and performance of the highway network through inspections, investigations and stakeholder engagement.
What you’ll be doing
- Carry out routine and reactive highway safety inspections, identifying defects and raising works orders
- Undertake detailed inspections and determine appropriate remedial actions
- Manage and respond to customer enquiries in line with policies and service standards
- Investigate third‑party claims relating to personal injury or property damage, ensuring robust documentation
- Attend meetings with local councillors, residents and stakeholders, representing the business professionally
- Support delivery across the wider Network Management service
- Contribute to minimising third‑party claims and supporting recovery processes
- Help deliver contractual performance targets and service standards
- Champion Health & Safety and Zero Harm across all activities
Who we’re looking for
- Experience in highways inspections, maintenance or operations
- A working knowledge of highways maintenance standards and policies
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Experience managing customer expectations in a professional manner
- Confidence engaging with elected members and stakeholders
- Good IT skills, including experience using works management systems
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied workload
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Essential Requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work
