Head of Safety – Submarines
Position: Full-time – Hybrid (Derby – Raynesway)
As Head of Safety, you will provide functional leadership and direction in managing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) for Rolls‑Royce Submarines Ltd (RRSL). You will implement risk‑based programmes, ensure safe operations and construction, and lead the HSE team to deliver on improvement plans.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement risk-based programmes of activity based on the risk profile.
- Ensure HSE critical controls are identified, managed (including through appropriate maintenance programmes) and effectively assured.
- Identify and manage significant business changes applying effective management of change.
- Provide operational leadership for “Putting Safety First” through setting expectations and leading by example.
- Lead improvements to functional and business HSE maturity by proposing and implementing changes.
- Represent the organisation on functional initiatives and lead changes across the division.
- Engage outside the business on initiatives to optimise the programme and understand wider applicability.
- Ensure good HSE governance (structure, process and content) is in place and report on overall effectiveness.
- Maintain management system compliance and initiate improvement programmes as appropriate.
- Review all relevant incidents for effective learning, coach senior leaders in investigations and incident reviews.
- Use operational HSE performance data to identify improvement actions through standard reports and the HSE balanced scorecard.
- Develop a risk‑based HSE assurance programme, including compliance with legal and other requirements.
- Interpret, communicate and review action on trends and insights; use assurance findings to improve risk management.
- Identify, prioritise and implement engagement plans with HSE stakeholders; communicate for improvement and change.
- Maintain good relations with Regulators.
- Define and monitor the Infrastructure business HSE capability requirements, develop competencies and capacity to support.
- Identify gaps in learning solutions and work with HSE function to address them; ensure a HSE Team people development plan is in place.
Qualifications and Experience
- 10 or more years of HSE management experience, including leading a team of HSE professionals.
- Major construction projects experience; nuclear experience desirable.
- Proven track record in conventional safety, safety culture, major projects, and HSE assurance and governance.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior managers and senior leadership.
- Experience in providing HSE advice and risk‑based solutions.
- Proven track record in solving complex problems and influencing others.
- UK national or dual national with a valid Security Check clearance.
