Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Company: Winston Fox
Apply for the Senior Infrastructure Engineer
Location: London
Job Description:

Imagine designing and operating a Kubernetes infrastructure of 100,000+ cores, supporting thousands of workloads, petabytes of data, and some of the most computationally demanding research environments in the world.

Imagine solving problems where resilience, automation and performance aren’t nice-to-haves—they’re fundamental to the success of the business.

If that’s the kind of engineering that motivates you, this is an exceptional opportunity.

This award-winning hedge fund’s every trading decision, research model and business process depends upon its world‑class engineering platform, and they continue to invest heavily in the people building it.

In this role, you would be joining the Core Platform Engineering team, focused on building the next generation of cloud‑native infrastructure, developer platforms and AI‑enabled operational tooling.

Why This Role Is Different?

  • Most infrastructure roles involve maintaining environments. This role is about building platforms.
  • You’ll be working on some of the most technically demanding infrastructure challenges found anywhere in the industry, engineering highly available, massively distributed systems where reliability, scalability and automation directly influence business performance.

Every decision matters.

  • How do you deploy software across thousands of Kubernetes nodes with zero disruption?
  • How do you observe millions of metrics and events in real time whilst identifying meaningful signals from noise?
  • How do you continuously improve developer experience without compromising security or operational resilience?
  • How do you remove thousands of hours of operational effort through intelligent automation?

A Culture Built Around Engineering

Unlike many financial institutions, this firm operates with a remarkably flat structure and an engineering‑first mindset.

Engineers aren’t confined to maintaining one corner of the infrastructure or waiting for requirements to be handed down. Instead, you’ll work closely with Software Engineers, Infrastructure specialists, Data Engineering, Quantitative Developers and Quantitative Researchers, taking ownership of problems from initial design through to production deployment.

The expectation is simple:

Identify problems.

Build them properly.

Improve them continuously.

If you’re someone who enjoys understanding why systems behave the way they do—not just how to fix them—you’ll feel right at home.

The Team

This team was created to build the internal platforms that power engineering across the entire organisation.

  • Building and evolving one of the firm’s largest Kubernetes platforms
  • Creating exceptional Developer Experience through modern tooling and self‑service platforms
  • Designing highly automated CI/CD capabilities
  • Developing AI‑powered operational tooling and AIOps platforms
  • Driving cloud‑native adoption across the wider technology estate
  • Eliminating manual operational overhead through automation and Infrastructure as Code

This isn’t simply another Infra or DevOps team. It’s the engineering group responsible for making every other engineering team faster, more reliable and more productive.

What You’ll Be Working On

  • The variety of technical challenges is exceptional.
  • You’ll help architect Kubernetes platforms capable of supporting enormous distributed workloads whilst continually improving scalability, resilience and operational simplicity.
  • You’ll engineer hybrid infrastructure that seamlessly integrates modern Kubernetes platforms with large‑scale on‑premise environments.
  • You’ll design automation capable of replacing complex manual operational processes with reliable, repeatable workflows.
  • You’ll build Infrastructure as Code frameworks that enable entire environments to be provisioned consistently and securely.
  • You’ll develop observability platforms capable of surfacing meaningful operational insights from vast quantities of telemetry, allowing engineers to detect and resolve issues before users ever notice them.
  • You’ll help improve deployment pipelines so that engineering teams can release software faster, more safely and with greater confidence.
  • Above all, you’ll spend your time solving interesting engineering problems rather than firefighting repetitive operational tasks.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of commercial Infrastructure Engineering or Site Reliability experience
  • Experience operating highly available production environments
  • Deep expertise with Kubernetes — internals, architecture and production operations
  • Strong Docker and containerisation experience
  • Experience designing and operating large‑scale Kubernetes environments
  • Advanced Linux administration and troubleshooting
  • Excellent command‑line and debugging skills
  • RHEL experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of networking, storage and virtualisation

Automation & Infrastructure as Code

  • Strong programming ability using Python, Go, Bash or similar
  • Experience writing robust automation and engineering tooling from scratch
  • Strong Infrastructure as Code mindset
  • Experience with Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Kapitan or similar technologies

Observability

  • Grafana
  • Loki
  • OpenTelemetry
  • ELK
  • LGTM Stack
  • Strong CI/CD experience
  • GitLab and GitOps

The Person

  • Technical capability is essential. Demonstrable intellectual curiosity and continuous learning is equally important.
  • The engineers who succeed here are naturally interested in how complex systems work.
  • They enjoy solving extremely difficult problems.
  • They challenge existing approaches.
  • They automate relentlessly.
  • They collaborate and consult with others and communicate complex technical ideas clearly (including to non‑technical staff).
  • They’re motivated by engineering excellence rather than simply completing tickets.

The Hiring Process

This is an organisation that sets an exceptionally high bar.

Technical capability, depth of knowledge and problem‑solving ability are thoroughly assessed through a series of technical conversations, engineering scenarios and practical challenges.

They’re looking for outstanding engineers, and they’re prepared to invest heavily to secure them.

  • Base salary up to £220,000
  • Realistic annual cash bonus of 80–100%+ of base salary
  • Private health and dental care, and insurance’s
  • Dedicated learning budget
  • Access to the firm’s investment funds
  • 25 days annual leave

Location

  • Central London
  • 4 days per week in the office
  • 1 day per week working from home

This Role Probably Isn’t For You If…

  • You’re in, or looking for, a management position
  • You want a fully remote role
  • You have a big consulting, outsourcing or contracting background
  • You’re not “demonstrably” passionate about technology outside of work
  • You’re a Software Engineer first and an Infrastructure Engineer second — flip that!

Why Join?

Very few organisations combine the technical complexity, autonomy, pace, compensation and engineering culture that this firm offers.

You’ll work alongside some of the brightest engineers in the industry, solve genuinely challenging problems, gain exposure to cutting‑edge technologies, and see the direct impact of your work on a globally successful business.

For the right engineer, this isn’t just another infrastructure role.
