Overview
Reaseheath College is a forward‑thinking and dynamic college providing an excellent educational experience to over 4,500 students a year. Situated within the grounds of the college is the Reaseheath Mini Zoo and Animal Management Centre, used by students and open to the public during school holidays and weekends. The team now have an exciting opportunity for an Animal Keeper.
About The Role
Due to continuous expansion within the Reaseheath Mini Zoo and Animal Management Centre, we now have a permanent position available to join our exotics team. The successful candidate should have experience to work with a wide range of taxa, with the ability to carry out husbandry and care for a range of mammals and birds, and more focused experience with aquatics, lower vertebrates and invertebrate species.
The purpose of the role is to provide an outstanding level of learning and learner experience and assist in the care of livestock and resources in the Animal Management Centre to the highest level of health and welfare.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the work of a variety of students and visitors accessing the animal collection.
- Support Animal Management lecturers and cross‑college staff in order to deliver an outstanding student experience.
- Ensure the care of animals on the unit is maintained to a high standard, including maintenance and security of the Animal Management Centre.
- Ensure effective stock control and husbandry in liaison with the Zoo Manager, including quarantining of specimens, in order to comply with the highest departmental and industry animal welfare standards and legislation.
- Assist the Animal Centre and Curriculum Managers in the day‑to‑day running of the centre in order to ensure all team members are fully informed of matters that may affect them.
The Successful Candidate Will
- Have a minimum Level 2 animal‑related qualification.
- Have minimum Level 2 Maths and English (GCSE Maths & English grade C or above).
- Demonstrate relevant knowledge and practical experience working with a range of species, and more focused work with aquatic, invertebrates & lower invertebrate species.
- Have demonstrable relevant commercial and practical experience in zoo or animal industry.
- Have demonstrable experience & knowledge of record keeping to comply with BIAZA, zoo licensing and the Balai directive requirements.
- Have First Aid at work qualification or willingness to work towards.
- Be able to work weekends or evenings as required.
- Hold a full‑clean UK driver’s licence.
