Consultant Radiologist with Cardio-Thoracic Interest

The post is based at Kettering General Hospital, with cross-site working encouraged at the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN). It is a replacement post with a sub‑specialty interest in cardiothoracic imaging. The post holder will join an established cohesive team of radiologists supporting clinicians and delivering acute and elective imaging in both specialist areas and in general radiology.

Main duties of the job

This post supports emergency radiology, cancer imaging reporting, attends multidisciplinary team meetings, and covers ultrasound (if appropriate), CT and MR sessions in the working week. The role includes all aspects of a sub‑specialty radiologist: supervising and reporting cardiac CT and cardiac MRI, cardiac imaging MDT, vetting, reporting, duty (hot reporting/CT/MRI and emergency service) and on‑call.

Job responsibilities

  • The work programme and job plan will be agreed on appointment. It is a full‑time appointment. It will include a minimum of 1.5 SPA (Supporting Professional Activities) and the rest DCC (Direct Clinical Care Activities). Distinct roles with other NHS responsibilities will attract further PA.
  • Remote working is supported as part of the job plan within the Trust and EMRAD consortium. Remote workstations can be provided (subject to availability).
  • The job plan will be subject to review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the clinical business unit management team across UHN to ensure services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match.
  • There is on‑call commitment, included in the weekly timetable. The rota is 1 in 13, which will be one weekday between 5 pm‑8 pm, and split weekends (10 am‑4 pm). Currently, 1 PA is given for on‑call.

Person Specification

Teaching / Audit / QI

  • Experience of audit and quality improvement
  • Experience of teaching junior staff
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching
  • Experience in curriculum development and delivery

Management Experience

  • Effective team worker, valuing the experience and contributing
  • Demonstrable team leadership skills and experience
  • Understanding and experience of delivering organisational change

Academic Achievements

  • Publications in recognised medicine / medical education journals or presentations at national level
  • Research experience relating to quality improvement

Qualifications and Training

  • Basic medical qualification (MB ChB/MBBS or equivalent) and FRCR equivalent
  • Sub‑specialty cardio‑thoracic training and working experience in NHS
  • Competency in supervising cardiac imaging lists
  • Completion of specialty training (CST or equivalent) or within 6 months of achieving it in relevant specialty
  • At least 2 years of working in radiology in NHS

  • Communication skills

Salary

£113,565 to £150,569 per annum, pro rata.
