Job Description:

A leading defence prime contractor is seeking experienced Engineering Work Package Managers (EWPMs) to support delivery within advanced aerospace and defence programmes, including Electronic Warfare (EW) and Future Combat Air (FCA) domains. This is a 12-month contract role based in Luton, requiring 80% on-site presence (4 days per week) due to programme requirements.

Role Overview

Working within an Integrated Project Team (IPT), you will lead a cross-functional engineering team to deliver a complete, compliant solution aligned with customer, contractual, regulatory, and organisational requirements. You will be accountable for balancing performance, cost, and schedule, ensuring engineering outputs meet programme objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Defining and structuring the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • Planning and scheduling engineering activities
  • Tracking performance using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Driving continuous improvement across engineering delivery

You will collaborate closely with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders, aligning engineering plans with programme constraints while managing resources and mitigating technical risks. The role spans the full engineering lifecycle from concept and design through to integration and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ensure delivery is on time, within budget, and meets required quality standards
  • Monitor and manage technical progress, risks, costs, and dependencies
  • Drive collaboration across engineering functions to deliver an integrated solution
  • Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and organisational standards
  • Provide clear engineering objectives and expectations to delivery teams
  • Promote adherence to engineering policies, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Manage teams across multiple sites and locations
  • Maintain strong communication across the IPT, including with the IPT Lead, Project Manager, and Functional stake holders
  • Oversee performance reporting, risk management, and technical governance
  • Ensure designs are robust, compliant, and fully documented
  • Manage configuration control and change processes, maximising reuse and efficiency

Skills and Experience Required

  • Proven ability to plan, structure, and deliver engineering work packages
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capability
  • Experience managing budgets, schedules, and delivery milestones
  • Effective stakeholder management and communication skills (customers, suppliers, leadership)
  • Demonstrated leadership capability with a collaborative approachGood understanding of the engineering lifecycle (requirements through to integration and delivery)
  • Strong commercial awareness and appreciation of programme constraints
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally
