This post provides supervised training for doctors who have obtained MRCP or are due to obtain it, aimed at those pursuing specialty training in the UK. It is structured as a portfolio‑based postgraduate training programme similar to Deanery posts but is not a Deanery post.
Training is supervised by a named consultant and concludes with a Certificate of Postgraduate Training. Duties are equivalent to a specialty registrar: inpatient care, outpatient clinics, diagnostic and invasive procedures under supervision, audit projects, clinical governance and research where possible.
The typical candidate should have full MRCP, or at least Part I MRCP with a plan to sit Part II/PACES within the next 6 months.
Fellows are expected to attend weekly teaching sessions, Grand Rounds, and study leave is available for MRCP preparation or other training courses.
Main duties of the job
- Inpatient clinical work: ward rounds, referrals and management of patients.
- Outpatient clinics: 2–3 clinics per week (may vary with department).
- Assisting consultant with procedures and investigations, progressing to independent operator.
- Maintaining a training portfolio and logbook of procedures.
- Attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings, Grand Rounds and other medical meetings.
- Participation in audit projects (minimum one audit every 6 months) and morbidity/mortality reviews.
Job responsibilities
- Provide clinical service to the Trust, general practitioners and multidisciplinary teams across three sites.
- Continue care and treatment of patients in charge and personal performance of clinical duties.
- Support A&E and acute medicine to ensure timely patient flow.
- Attend consultant ward rounds and triage ward referrals.
- Prepare patients for planned treatment and procedures, including post‐operative care.
- Provide consulting and advisory service to clinical colleagues, including discharge summaries.
- Attend multidisciplinary meetings, potentially across county and sites.
- Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high‑quality, timely service and meet Trust and departmental objectives.
- Provide professional supervision, training and management of junior staff, including teaching, assessment and accreditation, contributing to postgraduate and CPD activities locally and nationally.
- Participate in middle‑grade on‑call rota to cover emergency and urgent services during non‑normal hours, shared equally with peers.

Experience
- Completed at least seven years full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent part‑time).
- Clinical training equivalent to CT/ST3 level in relevant specialty.
- Experience within multidisciplinary teams.
- Expert clinical opinion in emergency and elective problems.
- Full independent responsibility for patient care.
- Minimum 12 months experience in NHS within the specialty.
- Use evidence‑based clinical audit to support decision making.
Management and Administrative Experience
- Organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Experience of audit management and conducting audits.
Professional Values and Behaviours
- Adheres to professional requirements of annual appraisal and reviews.
- Manages patients with complex needs while aware of own limitations.
Qualifications
- Eligible for full GMC registration with licence to practise at appointment.
- MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Completion of ST3‑5 training, or equivalent.
- Membership examination with relevant UK Royal College.
- ALS certification.
- ATLS certification.
- Attendance at recognised management courses.
- Formal qualification in teaching/education.
Research Experience
- Apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Awareness of current specialty‑specific developments and initiatives.
- Publications in relevant peer‑reviewed journals in last 5 years.
- Evidence of original research.
