As a Junior Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of projects from inception through to completion, ensuring profitable delivery while maintaining excellent client relationships and supporting wider project success.
About the Role
Wates Smartspace is looking to recruit ambitious and motivated Junior Quantity Surveyors to join our growing commercial team. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career quantity surveying professional to develop their skills within one of the UK’s leading fit-out, refurbishment and construction businesses. Working alongside experienced commercial leaders and project teams, you will gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of projects across multiple sectors and clients nationwide. The role offers a blend of office-based and project/site-based working, providing valuable hands-on experience throughout the project lifecycle. While you will be aligned to one of our key office locations in Leatherhead, London, Luton or Warrington, the position will involve regional and national travel to support project delivery as required.
Responsibilities
- Support the commercial management of projects from inception to completion, ensuring profitable delivery and excellent client relationships.
- Assist with commercial management of projects across multiple sectors and locations.
- Prepare and process subcontract documentation, including procurement and administration.
- Valuate works and prepare client applications.
- Monitor project costs and identify potential risks and opportunities.
- Manage subcontractor accounts, payments, and final accounts.
- Prepare financial reports and commercial performance reviews.
- Work closely with project managers, site teams, and senior commercial colleagues.
- Attend project and client meetings as required.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, contractual requirements, and commercial best practice.
- Develop understanding of contract administration, risk management, and project controls.
Qualifications
- Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Previous experience within a commercial, construction or surveying environment through employment, placements or internships.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Good commercial awareness and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proactive approach with a willingness to learn and develop.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, clients and supply chain partners.
- Flexibility to travel regionally and nationally to support project requirements.
- Working towards or interested in pursuing professional accreditation such as RICS or CIOB.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working within construction, fit-out, refurbishment or building services projects.
- Knowledge of common construction contracts and commercial processes.
