Main duties
All our wards are currently engaging in Quality Improvement projects to enhance service‑user experiences and deliver high‑quality outcomes. You will be invited to participate in existing projects and supported to identify new initiatives. The new ward offers ample scope for progression into both clinical and managerial roles.
Key responsibilities
Band 5 nurses contribute to safe and effective services through the following:
Patient safety
- Use clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep patients as safe as possible
- Safeguard people by recognising and reporting abuse or risk, and escalated concerns when necessary
- Act as advocates for patients and families
- Maintain openness and transparency about practice
- Supervise the work of other staff members
- Reflect on everyday practice to identify safety and quality improvements
- Collaborate with others to foster a culture of continuous improvement
- Maintain accurate, legible, comprehensive records
- Ensure compliance with mandatory training and regulations
- Engage in physical intervention/PMVA training and techniques as required
Clinical outcomes
- Provide skilled, evidence‑based nursing care in line with policies and procedures
- Collaborate with patients and families throughout the care planning process, including risk assessment and need evaluation
- Act as patient advocate within the multidisciplinary team and oversee the work of others to deliver clinically effective care
- Work autonomously while recognising personal limits of competence and confidence
- Contribute to high‑performing teams by:
- Communicating well with all team members
- Understanding each member’s role and team objectives
- Encouraging reflective practice during handovers and meetings
- Identifying opportunities for care improvement
Person specification
Education
Essential criteria: Registered Nurse Mental Health (NMC).
Desirable criteria: Mentorship or equivalent; completed preceptorship programme.
Experience
Essential criteria:
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, and respond to untoward changes
- Maintaining accurate records
- Knowledge of medication rounds and safe drug administration
- Practical experience of delivering high‑quality care and exceeding expectations
Desirable criteria:
- Experience in Acute Mental Health
- Experience facilitating group work
- Experience managing other staff
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria:
- Build constructive relationships with warmth and empathy; strong communication skills with colleagues and service users
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Take initiative with minimal supervision
- Understand the needs of people with mental health problems
- Provide supervision and support to junior staff and students
- Prioritise workload efficiently
- Implement person‑centred care
- Participate in and provide management and clinical supervision
Desirable criteria:
- Experience in taking charge of a ward
Knowledge and understanding
Essential criteria:
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and its amendments
- Knowledge of the NMC code of conduct
- Working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach Framework
- Awareness of new developments in nursing
- Working knowledge of risk assessment and management
- Current developments in mental health care and nursing practice
- Treat service users with respect and dignity, adopting a culturally sensitive approach that considers the whole person
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Understand clinical governance and its impact on practice
