ENT Consultant – Specialising in Head and Neck

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a dedicated Head and Neck/ENT Surgeon to join the department on a 10 PA job plan.

This replacement post is open to candidates with subspecialty training in Head and Neck Surgery who can complement and enhance the existing expertise within the department. The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Head and Neck Unit, including the management of urgent cancer referrals to ensure national targets are achieved.

Applicants should have fellowship training in major Head and Neck Surgery, including thyroid and complex airway surgery, and ideally possess consultant-level experience in these areas. The role includes commitments to outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and on‑call duties, with dedicated time allocated for administration and supporting professional activities.

The appointee will be expected to contribute actively to clinical governance, teaching and audit, supporting the department’s commitment to continuous improvement and high‑quality patient care. Access to a car is essential for on‑call responsibilities.

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities:

  • The appointee will be involved in running clinics, theatres and being included in the ENT consultant on call rota.
  • Head and Neck resections including laryngectomy, complex airway surgery, head and neck resections requiring free flap reconstruction, input of thoracic surgeons, transoral robotic surgery and skull base surgery (low volume high complexity surgery) will be performed at the QEHB site.
  • High‑volume low complexity surgery (day case) will be performed at the BHH site.
  • Support the department to achieve urgent cancer referral targets by seeing patients on the 2‑week referral pathway and managing them.
  • Take part in training and teaching junior doctors and allied health professionals.

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service.
  • Observe agreed policies on clinical matters and follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital.
  • Follow legislation governing the Trust, including infection control policy and attend required training.
  • Commit to continuing professional development in accordance with the Royal College of Surgeons.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registered with GMC, FRCS (ORL HNS)
  • CCT holder or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at interview
