The Role
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Interim Food Safety Officer to support a busy Local Authority in the West Midlands. This is a contract opportunity ideal for a competent officer who can hit the ground running and manage a varied caseload with minimal supervision. You will play a key role in delivering the council’s statutory food safety obligations, ensuring compliance with the Food Law Code of Practice while protecting public health.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver risk-based food hygiene interventions across Category A-D premises
- Conduct food safety inspections, audits, and revisits in line with FSA guidance
- Investigate food complaints, food poisoning cases, and infectious diseases
- Take proportionate enforcement action, including improvement notices and prohibitions where required
- Provide clear and practical advice to food business operators
- Maintain accurate records and reports in line with service standards
- Work autonomously whilst contributing to wider team objectives
Requirements
- fully qualified and authorised under the Food Law Code of Practice
- Hold one of the following: Degree/MSc in Environmental Health; or Higher Certificate / Diploma in Food Control (or equivalent)
- Be EHRB registered (or equivalent recognised body)
- Have recent experience working within a UK Local Authority
- Be confident inspecting high-risk premises (Categories A & B)
- Possess strong working knowledge of Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations, FSA Food Law Code of Practice & Practice Guidance
- Be able to work independently and manage workload effectively
