Role Overview

The Head of Credit Portfolio Risk is a senior leader within the Second Line of Defence Credit Risk Management function, reporting directly to the Chief Credit Officer for Europe. The role leads the risk oversight and delegated credit decision‑making across multiple credit portfolios (corporate lending, payments, institutional exposures, vendor‑related credit risk, and structured credit investments). The Head will also manage a team of credit risk professionals, administer the Credit Committee and sub‑committees, and develop and refine the bank’s credit portfolio strategy and risk appetite.

Key Responsibilities

Credit Decisioning & Approval Authority Framework Oversight

  • Act as a senior Credit Approver across all USBE credit portfolios, exercising independent delegated authority on complex and material credit proposals.
  • Oversee the delegation framework, ensuring consistency, performance, and continuous refinement of delegated authorities.
  • Lead and develop a team of Second Line credit approvers, fostering technical capability and alignment to risk appetite.
  • Set portfolio‑wide decisioning standards and manage escalation of complex or high‑risk transactions.

Credit Risk Governance & Committee Administration

  • Organise and lead the operational effectiveness of the Credit Committee, including agenda focus and quality of materials.
  • Administer supporting governance forums and chair sub‑committee meetings, maintaining clear distinctions from Committee responsibilities.
  • Ensure governance outputs are insight‑driven, forward‑looking, and linked to risk appetite and portfolio resilience.
  • Support the Chief Credit Officer in executive and Board‑level engagements, deputising when required.

Portfolio Strategy & Risk Appetite Stewardship

  • Develop and refine the credit portfolio strategy across all major asset classes.
  • Monitor compliance with risk appetite metrics and translate macroeconomic or regulatory developments into portfolio positions.
  • Oversee risk identification, including concentrations and emerging risks, and support scenario analysis and stress testing.
  • Review credit risk elements associated with the Strategic Plan and ICAAP.

Management Information & Portfolio Insights

  • Own the Credit Risk Management Information framework, providing decision‑ready insights on portfolio performance.
  • Produce high‑quality reporting on credit trends, early‑warning indicators, and emerging risks.
  • Translate risk analysis to outputs informing capital, stress testing and provisioning processes.
  • Deliver concise updates to senior management, committees, Board forums and regulators.

Structured Credit Risk Coverage

  • Ensure structured credit exposures receive robust independent review and appropriate governance escalation.
  • Maintain oversight of complex exposures, ensuring collateral dynamics and concentration risks are understood.
  • Integrate structured credit insights into risk appetite and governance discussions.

Cross‑Functional Leadership & Regulatory Engagement

  • Act as senior point of contact for credit portfolio matters across Risk, Finance, Treasury and the First Line of Defence.
  • Align risk appetite, policy, strategy, provisioning, capital considerations and business activity.
  • Promote second‑line independence while maintaining constructive challenge.

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead and develop the Credit Portfolio Risk function, setting clear expectations on culture, accountability and quality of judgement.
  • Ensure adequate resourcing and capability across generalist and specialist areas.
  • Foster continuous improvement and disciplined risk management culture.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 15+ years of credit risk management experience in a European or international banking environment across corporate, institutional, payments and structured credit.
  • Demonstrated leadership of credit portfolio management, risk governance and decision‑making functions.
  • Experience with multiple asset classes and specialist or complex exposures.
  • Strong track record operating under delegated authority and engaging senior governance forums.
  • Deep understanding of European regulatory expectations for risk governance and oversight.
  • Strong judgement, credibility and influence at executive and committee level.
