Medical Equipment Technician (Entry Level) Apprentice
This is a three-year apprenticeship designed to provide the skills, knowledge and experience required to become competent and qualified for an Agenda for Change Band 4 Medical Equipment Technician entry-level role. Following successful completion of the programme, the post holder will be expected to progress into the Band 4 Medical Equipment Technician (Entry Level) role, as described in the attached job description.
The successful candidates will undertake workplace-based training while completing the Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship in Clinical Engineering with the University of the West of England, Bristol. In-person attendance at the University of the West of England may be required as part of the programme. As an indication, this is expected to be limited to approximately 2-3 days per year. The remainder of the course is expected to be delivered online, although final attendance and delivery requirements will be determined by the university’s delivery model and programme arrangements.
The role will involve developing practical experience in the inspection, maintenance, repair, testing and management of medical equipment used in healthcare settings. Apprentices will work under supervision as part of the Medical Equipment team at London Ambulance Service NHS Trust and will be expected to complete all workplace, academic and apprenticeship requirements within the required timescales.

Applicants should be highly motivated, willing to learn, and interested in developing a career in medical equipment management and clinical engineering. Applicants should have an interest in working in a healthcare environment and be willing to develop engineering skills through both practical workplace training and university study.

Please note that successful candidates will also be required to apply separately to the University of the West of England for the Healthcare Science Practitioner Clinical Engineering degree apprenticeship programme. The university has a strict deadline of 31 July 2026 for full course applications to be submitted. Candidates offered a post must therefore be available to complete the university application process within this timeframe.
Job responsibilities
Perform planned preventative maintenance and safety inspections on a wide range of medical equipment, such as emergency lifting equipment, suction units, tympanic thermometers, pulse oximeters, and others, in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
Conduct electrical safety testing of medical equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Under the supervision of senior technicians, carry out complex fault-finding and repairs on medical equipment, ensuring timely resolution of technical issues.
Assess, commission, and perform acceptance testing on new medical equipment prior to clinical use.
Maintain an up-to-date and accurate medical equipment inventory within the Trusts asset management database, ensuring data integrity and completeness.
Accurately complete and maintain all technical records related to commissioning, maintenance, and repairs for own work in both paper and electronic formats.
Upload manufacturer service reports to the Trusts Asset Database for equipment under external service contracts, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of asset records.
Conduct routine audits of medical equipment and accessories within the Medical Equipment Workshop.
Under the supervision of senior technicians or the Section Manager, manage the decommissioning and disposal of medical equipment in compliance with Trust policies and regulatory requirements.
At the request of the Section Manager, the post holder will be responsible for the delivery and collection of medical equipment to and from any of the Trusts ambulance stations or hubs.
The post holder will be required to visit the Trusts ambulance stations and hubs, as directed by the line manager, to exchange medical devices and ensure compliance with annual servicing and maintenance requirements, including at unsocial hours to minimise disruption to frontline operational teams.
When required, work from any of the Trusts ambulance stations to carry out audits, maintenance, and repairs of medical equipment to support operational needs.
Adhere to Trust policies and procedures, maintaining competency in servicing and maintenance activities, including attending training sessions provided by external suppliers.
Maintain personal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Professional electronics knowledge acquired through training to diploma-equivalent level (e.g., BTEC, HNC).
- Full UK driving licence.
- A minimum of one year’s driving experience, including experience operating larger vehicles.
Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of electronics, including the ability to analyse and diagnose faults in complex equipment.
- Good understanding of medical equipment and electro-mechanical systems.
- Practical experience in performing test procedures to verify the performance of medical equipment. This includes carrying out preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, acceptance testing, and electrical safety testing.
- Experience in working with electro-medical engineering workshop practices.
- Experience in stock control and equipment distribution.
Skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical staff, manufacturers, and suppliers.
- Dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for use of precision tools, maintaining delicate equipment requiring precision and accuracy.
- Ability to perform repetitive equipment testing, work in awkward position, some lifting of heavy equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions to perform technical procedures and operate specialised test equipment correctly and safely.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain concentration when carrying out repetitive equipment testing and fault finding.
- Proficient in using medical equipment management databases to record maintenance and repair activities.
