Role Summary

Pharmacy Technician Team Lead, Clinical Trials – NHS Lothian Pharmacy & Medicines Service, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Western General Hospital. Band 6, 1.0 WTE (36 hours). Salary: £43,231 – £52,679 per annum (including weekend and public holiday work).

Post 1: Western General Hospital – delivery of the cancer trial portfolio.Post 2: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh – delivery of the non‑cancer trial portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical delivery of clinical trials within the assigned portfolio, prioritising and organising workload to maintain the highest standards across sites.
  • Review clinical trial protocols and amendments, advising the team on workload implications for the technical aspects of the trial, including available resources, facilities and required skills.
  • Develop the technical team structure, ensuring a resilient and responsive workforce to support clinical trial delivery.

Essential Qualifications and Competencies

  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent. Hold a National Certificate in Pharmacy Services and Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  • Hold a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Pharmacy Services Development and Management or equivalent professional experience, with supporting documentation.
  • D32/33 Work Based Assessor Certificate (to be obtained within 24 months of appointment if not already in place).
  • Formal Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) – to be obtained within 3 months of starting post if not already in place.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience as a pharmacy technician at a senior level, with leadership and staff management experience.
  • Specialist knowledge of clinical trials, gained through relevant training courses (e.g., NES Pharmacy Clinical Trials module, NIHR IMP management module, Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products eLearning) completed within the first 12 months in post.

Additional Requirements

  • Collaboration with the PVG Scheme: a current PVG record for the required regulatory group (child and/or adult) is mandatory. A new application to Disclosure Scotland will be required if not already a member.
  • Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, the role may require a different level of criminal records check; confirmation will be provided by the Recruitment Team.
