St Marys Hospital – Speech & Language Therapy Assistant
Are you motivated, enthusiastic and passionate about working in Speech and Language Therapy? This fixed-term contract (9 months) offers the chance to support the recovery of service users under the supervision of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist and to develop your knowledge of evidence‑based practice and guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate service user’s individual speech and language treatment plans.
- Lead one-to-one and therapeutic group sessions with service users who have cognitive and communication impairments.
- Analyse clinical audit data for service users.
- Follow department guidelines and standards to independently support the work of SLTs, including jointly planning and running therapy groups.
- Complete mealtime observations for swallowing safety with patients who have swallowing difficulties and cognitive feeding impairments.
- Support patients with communication and swallowing difficulties during community activities.
- Prepare personalised materials to support therapeutic interventions.
- Demonstrate communication strategies to families and carers, including the use of high- and low‑tech communication aids.
- Provide clinical administrative support to SLTs, including data collection and analysis.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience working in a care or therapy environment.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions accurately and to learn new skills quickly.
- Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literate: ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Understanding of confidentiality and the implications of non‑compliance.
- Ability to work with patients with behaviours that challenge.
- Aware of the impact of complex brain injury on a patient’s communication, cognition and swallowing.
- All candidates will be subject to a DBS disclosure.
