Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technician Apprentice – Jazz Pharmaceuticals
The Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprentice will provide mechanical and electrical maintenance skills to support manufacturing and development activities within a pharmaceutical environment.
Overview
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, with a 30‑minute lunch break. 40 hours a week.
Start date: Tuesday, 1 September 2026. Duration: 4 years.
Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance
- Responding to plant and equipment breakdowns
- Fault diagnosis, problem solving and rectification of mechanical/electrical problems – working collaboratively with other functions
- Involved in operational excellence (OE) continuous improvement initiatives
- Issue and comply with equipment, department, and maintenance schedules; use of CMMS to execute and complete work orders; documented maintenance and calibration is an integral part of the daily routine
- Take part in equipment qualification activities (commissioning, IQ, OQ, FAT, SAT)
- Create procedures (SOPs), internal service reports and machine setting sheets for new equipment and update existing as required
- Carry out maintenance and spares reviews for new capital projects
- Update and train in required risk assessments
- Carry out work in a way that will not adversely affect health and safety, security, or the environment and report any issues including near misses and accidents
- Maintain compliance with GMP, health and safety and environmental standards; quality is a primary focus to ensure patients receive a safe, effective and quality‑assured product
- Support investigations (safety and quality) as required by providing SME input

- Review and use information such as work instructions, drawings, design specifications and plant configurations
- Use planning, prioritising, organising and time‑management techniques to plan tasks
- Identify and organise resources (e.g. consumables) to complete tasks
- Respond and adapt to work demands, including re‑prioritising workloads for breakdowns and fault scenarios
- Identify equipment to work on and confirm plant configuration is as defined
- Prepare the work area for maintenance tasks
- Identify environmental and health and safety hazards and risks and apply control measures
- Apply health, safety and environmental procedures in compliance with regulations and guidance (e.g. signage, barriers, working at height, confined spaces, COSHH)
- Follow security procedures (site access, document classification, asset security)
- Follow emergency incident and response procedures
- Apply sustainability principles – minimising waste, segregating items for reuse, recycling and waste
- Use mathematical principles and formulae to support engineering maintenance
- Apply engineering maintenance standards and procedures, including foreign material exclusion procedures
- Follow maintenance tools and equipment control procedures (handling, storage, reinstate work area)
- Apply team‑working principles and communicate with others (colleagues, customers, stakeholders)
- Escalate issues outside limits of responsibility
- Record information and produce or amend documents (handover notes, reports)
- Use digital and information technology (databases, data‑sharing platforms, email, MIS, word processing) and follow cyber‑security and GDPR requirements
- Apply continuous improvement techniques to identify improvement suggestions
- Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities
- Electrical & control/instrumentation: confirm safe electrical isolation lockout‑tagout, use diagnostic equipment, perform fault finding and rectification, test insulation and continuity, conduct functional testing, inspect and calibrate control systems, set up and adjust instrumentation
- Mechanical: confirm lockout‑tagout, use mechanical maintenance tools, perform fault finding and rectification, inspect mechanical parts, repair/replace parts, run lubrication procedures, align and adjust mechanical systems
- Apply bench‑fitting techniques and maintain mechanical assemblies
- Ensure procedures are updated and comply with GMP, health, safety and environmental standards
Requirements
- GCSE in Maths and English (grade 4/C or above)
- 5 GCSEs including Maths and English (grade 4/C or above)
- Any course related to Maths or Science (grade CCC or above)
- Share any other relevant qualifications and industry experience – the apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect prior knowledge
